Taylorrmade not verifying serial numbers over the phone???

I just got off the phone with TM because I wanted to verify a serial number for authenticity. The customer service rep told me that due to people copying serial number verified over the phone to use for the knock off ones, they are no longer giving the authentication over the phone. He said there are two ways to verify:

1 - Purchase from an authorized TM retailer
2 - If you have the irons to go to an authorized TM retailer and they will verify them for you

Has anyone else come across this?

I think that's reasonable, prudent, and just plain logical by TaylorMade.
