I was at the golf store today testing out some drivers and they had a launch monitor setup. So I went through about 6 or 7 different drivers to find a couple that I liked to narrow down the plethora of choices some. What I noticed from watching the launch monitor is that as my backspin on the ball went down the carry went up. I averaged in the 108-112 range for club head speed, but carry could differ by 30yds depending on the spin. Is there a sweet spot for spin for specific swing speeds?

Some of the drivers were spinning 4000rpms+ and I lost a lot of carry on those. It seems like the best drivers were in the 2500rpm range and gave me 270+ carry. I'm not sure I believe that number since I rarely carry over 250, but I guess my current driver could be pretty high spin.

BTW, the G15 is a sweet club. Long and forgiving, based on the launch monitor at least.

i think that 2500 rpms is the best spin rate for most players which some as low as 2000 and others at 3000. my best head shaft combo was 2800 rpms in the 104-106 range but it's different for every player.

I can't recall what the launch angle was, somewhere around 10-12 maybe?

What you are probably not considering and what is probably the culprit is your angle of attack.

The angle of attack on a driver should be pretty much level meaning you aren't hitting down on it and you aren't hitting up on it either. By hitting more down on it, you are adding a lot of spin to the drive and also you are obviously going to launch it much lower.

If you hit a flat angle of attack or if you hit slightly up on it you increase your launch angle and lower your spin dramatically. This is the main reason why guys on the PGA tour hit the ball so far. It isn't swing speed (though that helps) as much as it is how they hit the ball.

The idea angle of attack on a wedge is about 10 down, a 7 iron is about 5 down, and a driver about 1 up.

I have seen people gain 30-50 yards of distance on drives by fixing their angle of attack.

Agree. I went my local range demo day last Saturday. The G15 was the most impressive club I demoed and I hit a lot of different clubs - TM, Callaway, Cleveland, Ping, and Mizuno.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

The monitor showed me whether I was hitting up or down on the ball, I couldn't find exact angles for that stat though, just a line representation. Most of the time I hit slightly down, my best shots were level though. I found myself really liking hitting on the monitor and getting instant numbers, easy to fix your swing when you know exactly what you did.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
