Got back from the range with the usual some-good-some-bad results. One thing I'm wondering about is a pretty dramatic change in ball flight with my irons. There's only a negligible loss of distance, now, but the trajectory is significantly higher than it used to be.

At first, I thought I was flipping at it, but that doesn't seem to be the case -- Nice happy divots after the ball. Perhaps I just got used to delofting, before? I moved from strong to neutral grip.

Not complaining at all, maybe I can finally stick a green or two rather than bounding right across them. Just curious as to what's physically going on, there.

Meanwhile, I've started fighting a bit of a slice -- Thinking I developed an OTT move when fighting the grip-induced pull-hooks? Preliminary results are still promising, but when I get out of whack and skiv off a banana slice it's frustrating as hell.

Although... My slice is actually closer to being in the fairway than my more vicious hooks ever were.

Oh! Another question: I'm still hitting the occasional dead push despite major grip overhaul. Isn't that... ODD?

There are a lot of reasons the ball flight can come up. With the exact same setup and a nearly identical swing I can change the trajectory of a 7-iron 15-20 degrees just by staying in flexion a bit longer through the hit or by really extending everything - back, knees, ankles, neck, arms, etc.

A strong grip doesn't help though, and some amateurs overstate what percentage of de-lofting is required. The delofting pros do isn't as severe as many seem to think.

Thanks -- Didn't figure it'd be a simple answer. (Is it ever? Haha.) My grip change involved literally about an inch and a half, close to two inches of weakening. I was also working semi-consciously on extensor action with the left arm (Lefty). Try to work on one thing at a time, but as you know... Something gets into your head and POOF.

Things I've been working on primarily: * Get comfortable with the grip change. * High finish with good left-arm extension through the hit. From how I'm understanding what you've said, the latter might have more to do with it?

If you take a standard 5 iron, 38 inches in length, with a lie of 60 degrees (both numbers from Clubmaker.net), if you forward press 2 degrees than your going to have your hands about 1.15 inches infront of the ball at impact. If you have your hands infront of the ball at impact with a 4 degree tilt, you basically take the 5 iron to a 4 iron loft, then your looking at about 2.3 inches ahead of the ball.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position. 
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
