Tour drivers that have a "deeper" club face - what exactly does that mean? I know they are harder to hit.....

A deep face driver simply means that there is more room up-and-down on the center of the clubface than side-to-side. I prefer a deep face driver because my typical miss is high or low on the face and not heel or toe. I don't know if that is why tour drivers are like that, but that is why I prefer them.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

exactly.

Nearly all drivers are deep faces now.

I was looking at the new TM Deeps TP, and it says it has a deeper clubface, but thats what all the TP versions say.

Are you sure they all say that? Currently all of the TP versions are just the normal version with a better shaft. The Taylor Made SuperDeep is just the SuperTri with a deeper clubface and a better shaft. A deeper clubface is merely taller, but the SuperDeep is also a little shorter front to back than the SuperTri.

I prefer deep-face drivers because they give you a bigger margin of error for tee shots off of chopped up tee boxes. (About half my rounds are on "budget" courses.)

Better players don't miss the ball towards the toe and heel as often as they do up and down on the sweet spot. Look at the current offerings from Titleist over the last few years. Their drivers and fairway woods have been offered in deep-face traditional shape heads as well as shorter-faces and wider heads favoring higher MOIs. Deeper faced clubs with shorter heel-to-toe lengths appeal to different types of players.

The deeper face and traditional shape of clubs such as the 909D2 and SuperDeep can allow engineers to put weight in different places of the head. In a players club with a deeper face, this is typically down higher in the head to reduce spin and promote a certain trajectory that can't always be achieved using a shallow-faced high-MOI club.

I thought the 909 D3 was the one with the deeper face, not the 909 D2!?!?

You are right. The D3 is the deep faced driver.

      _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.

      Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.

      I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.

      I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
