In order to reliably swing in to out you have to get your hands deep. At P6 the arm should ideally still be in, too. Otherwise it's manipulation - something Tiger has shown he can't even pull off very well.

Erik, do you have a reference point for the various positions in the swing? I know that I need to sort out my hands staying deep to eliminate my slice and pulls.

Excellent question, one I'm interested in hearing the answer of too.

At P6.....

Just curious what "hands deep" and "P6" mean.

It's just the geometry. If your hands are out too far, you can't easily swing from the inside without doing something else to compensate (like massive bowing of the left wrist or something). At P2 the butt of the club should have moved in, and it should still be in at P6 and the clubhead should be parallel to the target line, for example.

Just curious what "hands deep" and "P6" mean.

This has been in my signature for awhile now: "Reference: Terms/Phrases I Use".

Erik, I love how frequently you have to reference the 'Reference' in your signature(especially for deep hands). I've found a lot of the information in their extremely helpful. You should just make that blog post a sticky or something.

I don't know if you can do that (and it'd be somewhat presumptuous to do so), but that's mainly the reason it's in my sig file. I hope people will eventually learn to look there.

Anyway, inside to out is simply a function of being able to swing from the inside. Too many people put themselves in positions that almost entirely prevent them from coming into the ball from the inside - the arms and the butt of the club get too far out, they spin the hips too much, too early, etc.

Last year: Fade and slice
This year: Draw and hook

What changed: Deep hands

I haven't grooved it completely yet, so I can't control it, but my swing path definitely changed from out-to-in to in-to-out.
