I tee the ball quite low, about a quarter of the ball above the top of the club face, I always have a nice flight (fade) and contact, however this weekend I hit 2 drives in a row where the ball popped very high and left (almost lob wedge flight) as if I went under the ball and it came of the top of the crown, not sure what caused this or how I got the driver under the ball, did not feel like I hit the ground?

Any suggestions as to what caused this? have hit the driver on the range since and not done this.

I have done the same thing with my driver. From what I understand is that it happens because we hit the ball with a descending blow rather than an ascending one. The descending blow puts a backspin on the ball and robs distance. I've read that if the ball is tee'd up higher, it could flatten out the swing.

I usually do this when I don't get my weight forward. As a result, I hang back and cut down at the ball. I don't usually hit ground, not sure exactly what's happening at impact, but I have a few chips around the edge where the face of the club meets the crown. I think it must be that the club is just bottoming out and is still at a steep angle when it hits, then it pulls forward. At any rate, I've just gotta be sure I commit to the drive or I am at risk of this error. Unfortunately, once it happens, the tendency is to back off out of fear it'll happen again, which is exactly the wrong response.

OK played 18 yesterday, my tee height was higher than I thiought so I have lowered it so that the top of the ball is just above the clubface and I am not hitting the ball off the top of the face, no sky marks even when I did this so a slight height adjustment was all that was needed.

I think the reason behind this is that the only place I practice now has rubber tee's and the driving tee is quite low, so I have got used to hitting of this height with the driver so will see how it goes, for now though I am back to hitting them clean
