At White Pines GC in Bensenville, IL last night. I was playing the east course which is a par 70 and 68.4/118, and just short of 6000yds, but still, my best before this round was an 85!

I made the turn at 38 and let my brother record scores so I wouldn't be tempted to add it up and put more pressure on myself. It seemed like I was going to be close to 80 since everything on the back 9 was either par or bogey. We finished up 18 in a rush since it was just about dark (went off at about 4:45). I remember hitting my tee shot thinking keep this one low so it's easier to track the ball. Well it came out low and straight, but only 200 yds or so. That left me at about 250 from the pin and no shot of making it in 2 (Par 4). So I layed up with a 5i and left about 60yds to the pin. I put it on the green from there and needed a 16 footer for par. It came up about 6 inches short and I thought that was it, my 70 is gone. I tapped it in and got back to the cart as my brother was adding up the scores. I didn't want to look, but after a minute he shouted out 40, I had to double check just to be sure. Yup, 78!

The lessons I'm taking are really paying off. I'm confident that I can hit greens from 150 in now and have eliminated those blow up holes. The other thing that really helped my round was the slow greens, with putting, and for sticking approach shots. My short game is usually below average, but the slow greens allowed me to be really aggressive with putts and chips without fear of blowing it 10 feet by the hole.

Congratulations! Breaking 80 for the first time is a fantastic feeling. Enjoy it and build on the accomplishment!

Congrats! I broke 80 yesterday, for my first 70s round of the year, boy does it feel good when things start to come together.

Hope you keep up the good play.

Waiting for summer...

    • Terry - what a story…I’m about 12 yrs your junior but I do have friends in similar places of life. Like others have said - “go for it”.  The fact that you’re willing to challenge yourself in the midst of dealing with something like Parkinson’s is hero level stuff….looking forward to seeing how this great adventure plays out and make sure to get some of it on video as well.  Make them memories dude!
    • Played nine today. Just went out trying to make a swing that had the feels of what I am working on. I would give it a C- at best. The best swing came on the 9th hole, 220 yard par 3, downwind. I finally made a swing where I felt the pause, and the arms down stuff like I practice. I hit the 4 iron about 215 yards, it rolled just off the back of the green about 20-Ft from the pin.  I might play 10 yards shorter on every iron shot, and make that pause swing, cause I can still hit it about 90-95% the distance.  Distance wedges or 3/4 wedges are going to different. Shanked two of them today trying the pause, arms down stuff. Might spend a bit of time looking at the video on those shots specifically.
    • Day 350: good practice session today. Hit about 25 balls, working slowly on my priority piece. It looks decent in slow motion. Better at full speed but not quite there. Then putted for about an hour. Focused on putts inside 10’ but also did a stack putting session.
    • Two of my golfing Buddie's are left handed. I will play a couple of rounds and use their clubs and see how I do.  Played last Thursday and had the worst game ever. (Playing in really strong winds. (SW @ 20 to 30 mph with > gusts.)  Will let everyone know when I get back out. May not play until Monday.   Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.    Terry
