Is this Donnay club set a good deal for a beginner?

I've FINALLY convinced one of my best friends from college to take up the game. He's living in The Netherlands will take on the game slowly since he has two toddlers at home. He found the below used set for sale and I wanted to see what other forum members thought. I don't want his 1st set to make the game too difficult that he gives up but $$ can't be too much right away. Here is the description:

Complete set of Donnay Classic V Titanium Graphite shafts right handed man golf clubs for sale. That includes Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, iron set 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,Pitching Wedge(Elite steel),Sand wedge and Pro 1 Putter. It also includes a rather new bag (Pathfinder, cross), a few tees and balls... In very good condition. Asking price 175 euro or best offer. ($214 US)

Not familiar with Donnay brand. Irons appear to be cavity backs(help get ball up), and woods larger headed.

Big thing would be to get your friend a static fitting with the clubs. Make sure the shafts are not too long or too short for him, and the face lie not too upright or flat. Also, is the shaft flex OK for him?

For beginners, the key is to get clubs that won't hurt your game. If the clubs just don't fit him physically, it will make a challenging game impossible. That's why I discourage new players from buying clubs -via the internet - which they haven't touched or seen.

Like the guy above said never heard of the brand but for a guy that is just "trying" the game if he was my buddy I wouldn't let him spend a lot of $$$$$$ right now. If he has never played before it doesn't matter if it is a $200 complete set or a big dollar custom set he isn't going to go shoot par the first year. Whatever he gets just make sure he knows that this year is all about the basics. Hit the ball....make good contact.....get the ball up in the air.....and try to put the ball in the cup. Tell him not to get frustrated and enjoy the game. This is a game and only a game odds are he isn't going to make the open next year so just have fun!!!!

I'm sure you guys have heard of Donnay - just not Donnay golf clubs. Back in my day, they were HUGE in tennis. I can see picture Bjon Borg with the big D on his racquet.

We don't associate Donnay with golf, but a lot of people aren't aware MacGregor made tennis racquets either.

If he is in Europe why not try somehting like this Hippo full set for £99 (€116/$145)
