I'm contemplating which book to buy between Hank Haney's essentials to a golf swing and the stack and tilt book. I'm new to golf (been playing almost two weeks now). I practice a bit and want to work on a solid swing before I develop, or continue to reinforce, any negative aspects to my swinging.

Which book would you get or perhaps you can steer me in the right direction overall?

I would say the best option would be to pay for a lesson or two. You'd be amazed how much you can learn in just a short amount of time from a qualified professional. That way, you'd be getting personalized instruction based on your current swing....

First off, I'd get an all-inclusive book that has a generalization of every kind of shot and lie, has some basic rules and etiquette, and has some descriptions about equipment - styles and what to use when. You can probably copy any good golfer you see on TV or take a couple beginner lessons for the first few months - anything more could be mumbo jumbo and jibberish at first anyway - I'm totally serious. Pick up a swing pattern book in the fall - something to work on over the "winter".

The Stack and Tilt book. I have many golf books, including Mr. Haney's and the S&T.; The S&T; book, out of all the books I've read, best explains why the golf ball flies the way it does depending on the golf swing and clubface. Most golf books teach a method or physical movement, without explaining the reasons.

By understanding how the golf ball reacts to a particular swing path and club face, we can fix our swings by correcting the appropriate part. The S&T; book gives you this knowledge.
