So I go to the golf course today and noticed I had something in my tire causing a slow leak. During the round I'm thinking "great, I'm 2 hours from home, I'm playing a crappy round of golf, now I have to change a tire?!!?" After the round I see that the air pressure really hasn't gone down much at all. So I decide to take it slow and hope there's a gas station close. Turns out the closest thing, a block away, was a Discount Tire Center (Oceanside, CA). Huh, I got these tires from Discount Tire's eBay store, there's a coincidence. So I pull in and talk to the manager, Mike, to see if they have the same tire in stock, how much it would cost, and how long it would take to replace. Before I got my questions out he was already talking about "why don't we fix it for free?" I've never done business at this store, didn't buy my tire from this store, and they still fix my tire for free? Totally awesome! I flipped Mike $20 to give to the guy that did the repair work.

Nice work. I have the worst luck with tires

I don't, or should I say haven't. But this was my second tire incident in two months. The last was a full on blowout. Also after a 2 hour drive and right as I pulled into the house I was staying, thankfully not on the freeway.

That blowout sounds awful. I got some nice performance tires for my can and got a screw in one about a week in. it was fixable. Then another week after, I got a nail in the same tire. that one was too close to the sidewall to be plugged. other than that, I'm just really hard on my tires and wear them down quickly. so I guess I don't have bad luck with tires, I just feel like I'm buying new ones all the time. haha

Nice, have to use them again.

I bought a tire from Big-O and paid for the 3-year extended road hazard warranty. 1 month (and a pothole) later, I needed replacement, which they grudgingly agreed to. Then they presented me with the bill!

$30 for mounting and balancing and tire disposal fee
$19 for a *new* 3 year road hazard warranty

Uh, what kind of warranty expires upon use? How is it that they don't mention the mounting and balancing costs when they sell you the warranty?

What a crap operation - back to discount tire. Thanks for the reminder.

I've had 2 blow outs in the past year. One was on the Interstate, at night, during rain, in an early '90s Pathfinder (the in-laws gave it to us to haul stuff between stores...) - so I had to figure out how to get the spare down from it's position in a car I wasn't used to as cars are flying by at 70-80mph. I ended up buying brand new tires for the Pathfinder, only to have the transmission go out a month later...

The 2nd was on a rural highway in Missouri, in my own vehicle - fully loaded with shit for the weekend at the lake. I had to take everything out to get to the spare. The tire was shredded - like I ran over a Police spike strip. Luckily a guy at a small tire shop in Osage Beach had a used tire that was in great condition. He gave it to me and installed it for $20.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
