Greenskeeper on divots

People often ask about divots, how much of a divot they should take, etc.

I played on a course with zoysia turf today. I hit a couple of decent iron and wedge shots. The ball checked up OK, but I didn't have much of a divot. Iron just shaved the grass off at the soil line, although I made ground contact.

A greenskeeper drove by and stopped to chat. I remarked that he had pretty durable turf grass. He said the zoysia gets to be almost like a rug, and you really have to hit down on the ball to take an actual divot.

Just throught I'd pass this along. If you stop the ball but don't take much of a divot, ask the greenskeeper what type of turf grass you have. Maybe your swing is OK after all.

Zoysia grass is all we have around here. I love playing on it. If you get a course that mows it really tight it is like playing off a sponge. The ball sits up and it is so easy to get the club through the ball due to the spongy nature of it. It is almost like the ball is floating off the ground a half inch or so. I can also spin the ball much more on zoysia than on bermuda which allows a few more options.

I think my course has Zoysia grass.
It's hard to take a divot here

I think Ohio uses mostly bent grass, but i am not sure.
