I tied my son on the back nine yesterday. It was neat to come that close. He had a bad round and I played a little over my head but I shot a 42 and he also. He beat me by 7 on the front tho so it ended up 79 to 86. I found my right position and stance for my driver on the back nine and was pounding them out there again like I use to. I hit a couple about 270. Really felt good. I went back to the open stance and come from the inside. It shortens my back swing some but gives me the delayed hit I've been searching for. I had a slight fade which is normal with that stance but when I square everything up it seems I can't get my body out of the way. Open stance allows me to do that. We both birdied no. 15. a 525 yd par five. He was on the green in two going for an eagle and I thought I hit a bad 9 iron but it ended up two feet from the pin. I holed mine and he two putted. It was fun even if I didn't get under 80.

Nice to know dude but what's the point?

The point? Did you read what he wrote? His son is better than him at this point in his golfing career, and he played stroke for stroke with him for 9 holes, that's the point. Good job rembrandt, I'm sure he had some uneasy thoughts of his father beating him

. Keep it up.

^I''m quite new here and didn't know here is normal to mention if a son and a father have played against each other...

Sorry about that......my son played on the Nike Tour for a few years and he scores in the mid to low 70s consistantly. Myself, I had to give up golf about 6 years ago due to hip problems. I had the hip replaced and now I'm back out there hitting the links like old except for my swing and score. I haven't beaten him in 20 years and might not ever beat him again but it took him about 7 years to finally beat me. Once he did, I was history. If I can get lucky I might give him some trouble. We use to play together and it was nip and tuck all the way. The best round we ever had ended up 70 to 68. He beat me on the last hole. He told me the other day that he really didn't appreciate what we had going all those years till I had to quit back in 99 and now he loves seeing me back out there with him. Golf is a great game for relationships and good for life!

Great playing Rembrandt... I wish my son's played the game, but they do not. We all used to flyfish together, but I took up golf. They did not follow.

This should give you bragging rights at least through Christmas.

I use to fly fish with my dad. We had some trying times in a boat. I'd love to trout fish up in the mts. My dad, who is 95 still rides his horses and drives around town and he and my mom just celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

I also flyfished with my Dad. We lived along the Mississippi River and fished the "oxbow" lakes for largemouth bass and panfish from a flat bottom boat. My Dad was known for his ability to cast very accurately in those close quarters. I started trout and smallmouth bass fishing in rivers and streams about 15 years ago. I still go a couple of times a year, but golf is a demanding mistress.

I probably could improve a bunch if I hit more buckets and played more but I am working every day at my art trying to get ready for two shows this winter and spring. I have about 15 paintings to do and I do drawings and Native American art on gourds also. Masks with horns and figures. Love the sculpture effect that gourds give. Anyway, my golf game will have stay on the back burner for awhile till I get my art together! I also make deer and elk horn knives and do leather work. That also will have to stay in the background for awhile.

I'm pretty lucky... I get to play golf with my dad about once every other week. He's about an 18 and I'm about a 10 however, there are days when his gets his bone chips in line and plays pretty good. The other day he smoothed around a 78 the best 18 holes I've seen him play in a couple of years. I thought he was going to kick my butt. He shot 38 on the front and I shot 42. However, on the back he shot 40 and I had a career 31.

I love to play golf with my dad and hope there will be many more years to follow. Great thread Rembrandt.

You sound as multi-talented as my wife. She paints, knits, crochets, sews, ad infinitum... I have one talent... I can get out of her way while she creates.

I, too, think I need to spend some time on the range. I keep saying I'm gonna do it, but I get to the course and it just looks too inviting to play this time of year... I must develop some discipline. The gourds sound interesting.. Where do you go to shows??? Canton???

My dad was never a golfer. He was a corporate mucky-muck in Alaska back in the day and his company would drag him out for golf in Arizona back in the day. He never was serious about it.

He just moved to Gig Harbor, WA a couple of months ago and we've been out three times so far. Its a lot of fun. He has a long way to go but so do I. I shot my best round with him. He appreciates help with his swing. Its fun to help him. We have a great time cutting up and being our demented selves on the course.

Hey, I do go to Canton (First Monday) alot but I go for the antlers and to shop around. We are having an ART SHOW at the country club where I work during the Dogwood Trails and the other show will be a one man show at the Museum here in Palestine. Looking forward to that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
