What would you guys tell a hacker that tries to slap the ball as hard as he can from the top of the backswing? More specifically, what movements need to change to go from slapping at the ball to swinging through it in a controlled, powerful manner?

its pretty much tempo and make sure your turning with your body rather than throwing your arms at the ball.. the downswing is really your body just turning through and your arms are just attatched along for the ride down. so try slowing down that tempo and make sure your turning your body through rather than trying to swing at it with your arms.

Don't swing with your arms, swing with your hips and shoulders. That and Flying V!

Hit about 50 balls with a 7 iron, keeping your feet together OR just standing on your left foot with right foot back up on toe. Appreciate how your head automatically stays anchored during these swings. Take it easy, slow tempo.
Spread your feet apart and take the same swings being aware of two things: Your head doesn't move for backswing and transition. AND load as much weight and pressure into your left foot at the same time you reach the top of your swing....hit it as hard as you want to. With a good swing you'll automatically fire at the ball with the right muscles.

Kilbyman, have you ever tried swinging a weighted club? I know it doesn't help with swing speed, but I think it helps with sequence and keeps you from strong-arming the swing. There is also a training aid called The Orange Whip (I haven't tried it, but many recommend it) which is supposed to help with pivot and sequence.

The best thing to do is go to your pro and get him to point out your reverse pivot. With a proper weight shift, extending the arms through impact and getting rid of the chicken wing is cake.
