Well about this time last year I got serious about becoming a good player, I put so much time into it reading stupid intructions and way too complicated guides and I failed miserably after putting so much effort in, like so many do until recently, I decided to focus solely on fundamentals nothing else, grip, set up alinement etc.

Last week while watching the open I really took notice of the players hand position at address(not grip) I copied this, feeling as though my hands were way behing the ball when really they werent, creating a little cupping in my left wrist at address then trying to keep it facing the target during the takeaway and focusing on maintaining this angle throughout the backswing, thus making it impossible to flip the wrist on the downswing at impact, now I know your all probably laughing saying....obvious very basic or watever, but I shot a 69 in a stiff breezy today(my previous best being 79 whilst hacking)

Long story short I want to know why their are so many bs over-complicated golf advice going aroung I mean its ridiculous, watching sevams vids on youtube as I once did when unable to hold the club correctly, is it all just a money racket..? secret here hogans magic move there, when ever pros are asked wat they are working on, luke donald was saying leg action and rory mcilroy was talking about improving his alinement just basic things, is this why the average golfing score has not changed from 100 because people are looking from a magic move or club to solve all there problems...? Just as arrogant as I was when reading the triple x factor and not being able to take the club away properly

Sorry for the essay but I would love to hear other peoples opinions on modern instruction....and yay I shot under par for the 1st time

score trends go up & down. don't be surprised if you go up next time. fact is you got to 79 the old way, put a little more focus in and it payed off.

You didn't do "modern golf instruction." You gave yourself instruction from magazines and had one good round so far...

But today I actually hit the ball properly, really compressed it and shaped it at will it was unbelievable when I shot 79 I hacked my way to the the green and my short game was hot, Im not trying to boast(well not really) I just cant believe how easier this game is when you focus on the bare essientials, but most people myself included neglect them

I read everything watched everything and still couldnt break 90 the majority of the time just flipped my wrists and hacked, I usually only hit 1 ouuta 100 balls as I hit everything today, I was unbelievably bad, I mean shocking, Im sorry I dont mean proper golf instuctions from an intructer I mean the crap on the internet youtube and golf digest etc

Kinda same with me, I have a natural solid swing, I tried to add some S&T; last two - three weeks, we have no instructors here teaching stack and tilt .... so I have to learn a new swing from a book (very good book indeed) and some youtube video's..... it took at least 2000 balls at the drivingrange to combine a series of unnatural moves, fight against my normal swing and I felt so uncomfortable with the need to aim right of the target to get back online ......

And above that I got about sick of 100 - 150 yds shots to the green ending 10 - 20 yds left of the flag, whenever I forgot to aim well right of the target. I never had to work so hard to save pars and bogeys before.......

Anyway I implied some of the S&T; "rules" into my swing, like weight more forward, a better release, sliding the hips more forward and a fuller rotation, than I did before, but else went back to my natural (traditional) swing ....... I like to aim at the target !!!

I understand ball flight better now and can now better than before understand what I did wrong when my ball does this or that .......

I decided to not longer fight my swing that has been formed over about 25 years !!!

It took me also a few days at the range to get back to where I started from, maybe a bit better than before now.

At least the focus I had last about 4 weeks working on a solid ball contact lowered my handicap from 15.3 to 10.2 ..... soon I will go into single HC as I played a few training rounds lately well below HC 10.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.

    • Day 306 - More of the same focus, grip and backswing. Used the Divot Board to see how group contact was, and as expected, half the time I wasn't even making contact with the board.
    • Day 198 (16 Nov 24) - A little backyard pitching fun with the grandson with wedges, foam balls today.  Love working with him on short game drills.  Priceless is the word.
