As for the earlier comment that a set of orange dots was $81 on ebay, I'd say there must have been a reason for it. Like mis-matched serial numbers, or mis-matched shafts or something. A decent matching used set is going to run $175 or more in my experience.

The listing I read said all SN's matched and all shafts were the same. The seller also had a 100% feedback rating so I don't think it was false advertising.

In my experience, I've seen many sets advertised as matching on Ebay that sold for less than $175. The norm seems to be between $100-$200 with BeCu's running considerably higher. As with any commodity, it's an issue of supply and demand...and color code makes a lot of difference.
That's a good idea. I take it just going off the chart on the PING website probably isn't good enough huh?

I don't think so, but others may disagree with me on this point. I think it's a good idea to have a professional take a look at your ball flight with a 7 iron in addition to the online static fitting. I did so and and the pro recommended a different color code than what the online fitting suggested.

chart says Im a blue or yellow dot; Im 6-00 with a 35 inch floor to wrist. I may need to swing by a pro shop for a fitting. I bet blue or yellow dot eye 2's are hard to come by huh?

Don't go by the chart. I am 6'2" with a wrist to floor of 37 and I hit the mat and came back black dot. All of those charts are very basic every swing is different.

I play the Copper Eye 2s. They are pretty forgiving, but like someone mentioned, I find they are about 1 - 1 1/2 clubs shorter than when I hit my dad's X-18s. Also, I can't hit the 5-3 iron as well as with the modern clubs, but I am not great at this game obviously. When you hit them pure though, it is a greeeaaat feeling club.

I've seen blue dot Eye 2's for sale on Ebay and while they're a little less common than say, black dots, there's not quite as much demand and you may be able to bag some cheap. I'm not familiar with yellow dots but a few years ago Ping tweaked their color coding system to fill in a few "gaps" so I imagine yellow dots are part of that new process and they might not be so easy to find in any of their newer irons and impossible to find in Eye 2's which were coded under their old system. I still say, though, that you should swing by the pro shop because a static fitting only gives you part of the overall picture.

Im going to do that. Maybe see what they have any used sets of eye 2 laying around the shop.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies!

That is because the Eye2 lofts are much weaker than your dad's X-18s. Your dad's 6 iron is probably the same length and loft as your Eye2 5 iron.

One more question; how do you think the eye 2's would be in forgiveness as compared to the Big Berthas I have now? Or is that like comparing apples and oranges?

Thanks!

Speaking only based on my own experience, most of the newer SGI clubs (which is what I would call the Big Berthas) are giant clunky things with wide soles that may be OK when hitting off a tee, but are very difficult (for me) to hit off the fairway or chip with around the greens. Also, most of these sorts of clubs are set up to promote a draw, which for me makes them hooking machines (but might help someone who is slicing the ball all over the place).

Eye2's on the other hand, play very neutral for me, and represent a good combination of forgiveness and playability. Which in my view means they can help a beginner, but can also work well for a more accomplished player.

Thanks for the response. Since the cost of eye 2's can be pretty reasonable, I think I will try to pick up a set and play with them for a bit. The hard part will be finding the correct set that fits me. Its nice to know I can probably re-sell if they dont work out.

Thanks!

I am more partial to the Ping Zings that replaced the Eye 2s. But I don't think you can go wrong with any set of clubs from "Karsten MFG Corp." Made in the USA!!

I tried them, as well as Zing2's, and found they were larger, clunkier, and promoted a draw / hook more than the Eye2's, similar to the rest of the game improvement clubs out there.

If you are a slicer, these will fix you.

I do have a bit of a slice, so these may work. I found a set of Zings in a local store for $159, but they set was missing the 9 iron. I also found a set of eye 2's in the same store for $210, with all the clubs in the set (3-w I believe). Prices seem ok? Both were in good condition, but could use new grips.

The salesman in the store tried to steer me away from them saying they would be very difficult for me to use. He said they were good to collect as classics, but otherwise I would probably not care for them. Any thoughts? Think he just wanted to sell me a new set? Thanks!

I would buy a set of Eye2's that fit you, are in good shape, having matching serial numbers, have the set make-up you want, etc. $210 for such a set is OK IMO.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
