Get Fitted but by who??

Wanted to share my fitting experience...about 10 months ago I got fitted at a local store for some Mizuno MP-52's, purchased and started playing them (DG S300 shafts). I have always had some challenges with the clubs and figured it was just me. Dont get me wrong, I hit them fine, but I dont like the ball flight and I am not so wrapped in the distance. Anyway, I have been havng lessons for a few months and my pro recommended I get a proper club fitting by someone who knew what they were doing. So we went to the guys recognised as the top guys in our country. What a surprise. They point blank stated the DG S300 were a bad fit for me (after more than 1 hour of hitting balls with the launch monitor on the range). They set me up a few options to go out and play with with the same MP-52 heads plus some 62's. I can not believe the difference, totally different flight, no jarring when I hit the ball, its just a treat.

Well the lesson here is there is fitting and there is fitting!!!! So be careful. BTW, the device Mizuno have released for club fitting is very, very close to the data that comes off the launch monitor (in my experience), limited data but what you get is spot on!

So what shafts are you fitted for now?

When you originally got your irons, didn't you hit different shafts outdoors?

What did the fitting at the local store entail? Did it involve using the Mizuno shaft selector? Did that give you bad advice, or ... ?

Yeah I'm intrigued by this, what exactly did they change on the first set or the second fitting?

Like many, I'd always heard to get fitted, and had also heard that if you got a bad fitting that could be even worse. So the question was: how do you find a good fitter? Well, I decided to go straight to the source: I knew what clubs I had wanted, so I called Titleist. I asked for their rep in my area and they gave me his phone number. I got his voice mail and basically left him a message saying "I know you're used to dealing with million dollar accounts and I'm just some schlep who needs advice", figuring I'd never hear from him. Much to my surprise, he called me back in about 3 minutes. Nicest guy in the world and he said I did exactly the right thing. He gave me the name of who he considered his best fitter in the area and the rest is history. And by the way, the fitter was at a locally owned golf course (small course) and I ended up getting the AP-1's for $100 less than at the box stores (including different shaft/grips) and I've since bought all my equipment through them at a much lower cost than what I could at say Golf Galaxy.

So I can't speak for all manufacturers, but because of my experience Titleist ranks very high on my list when it comes to customer satisfaction...mainly because of their rep taking a couple of moments out of his day. Because of that, I've become pretty much a Titleist loyalist (note: clubs you see in my bag are older than my irons...working on getting them replaced!).

Ok, stupidly, I did nto hit a variety of shafts outdoors originally, the fitting comprised usign a launch monitor indoors, my guess is this was the problem. The new shaft is a Nippon 1050 regular (hard stepped - whatever that means)...I can only say the ball flies much nicer, its easier to hit and I put 11 balls from 155m (like 170 yards) out of 12 on one of the par 3's on the course. I also tried my current clubs and needed 1 club more also missed it right.

I think its fair to say i learnt a lesson the hard way...I had some Callaway's fitted on the range and they were fine, any future fittings will be done on the range also. Right now I am pretty pleased with the new result :)

The Mizuno shaft selector is actually very good from what I can see, its results were very similar to that provided by the launch monitor.
