I've pulled some without a puller, but to be honest I mangled quite a few shafts as well. There's just no way to get enough force on the head without putting too much heat to it, and melting the resins in the tip. I didn't trust myself to pull any decent shaft until I got a puller.

I bought a Roberts puller off Ebay and it's been great. Pops shafts out no problem, 20sec of heat with a heat gun and it pulls them right out.
