My local Play It Again Sports has about a dozen old Vokey wedges for sale, each about $45-$50. They are obviously used, some more worn than others. The question - is an old Vokey still better than a new "no name" wedge? I have one of those Adams Tom Watson wedges that are for sale everywhere.

I know I don't have pics or detailed descriptions, but assume the Vokeys are definitely used and worn-looking. I don't have any idea how much that affects actual play.

To answer your question, I would rather have an old Vokey than a "no name" wedge, however I wouldn't consider the Tom Watson wedges "no namers". They are very solid wedges. If I hadn't recieved my Vokey's as gifts, I would still be hitting them. :)

As long as the Vokeys aren't worn to the point of being useless (i.e., they can still put a decent amount of spin on the ball), I'd rather have one of them than a no-name club. I might be a total victim of marketing, but the Vokeys (and wedges from other reputable manufacturers) just seem to have better functional design behind them, from the weight distribution to the sole design, to the shaft, etc. They feel like 'real' clubs when you play them.

The only no-name wedge I ever played was a $20 bargain tub special. I hated it - the weight didn't feel right, the shaft felt weird, and I never got comfortable playing with it. No matter what I did, I couldn't hit that thing with a full swing. I figured it was just my lack of skills since I was new to the game but that perception totally changed once I hit a 'good' wedge (Cleveland Reg. 588). It was at that point that I realized wedges were supposed to play more or less like the rest of your set.

That said, I play Vokeys and love them but I can't say they're a huge benefit over another reputable wedge that might be a bit cheaper.

Dollar for dollar, I'd probably choose a cheaper (but still reputable) new wedge than a well-used Vokey. The biggest benefit to new wedges is all in the grooves. Unless you're a very skilled player I doubt clubhead design differences really make a huge difference in performance (between brands with comparable technology).

Depending on how used they are, that may not be a very good deal anyway. I got a used Vokey a while back for $27 that was in pretty good shape. The place where I got it had a few others in the same price range.

for $50-60, i'll take a brand new CG12 or 588 and call it good.

I got my vokeys used for a good price with no wear. They looked like they had been hit a couple times at the range. Now that I have had them for a year they look worn, but nothing like the worn out wedges you usually find at pias. Vokey is the same as any other top end wedge. I agree with golfro and sam, buying a worn out wedge for $45 simply because it is a vokey isn't a smart decision IMO. I own a cg 12 56 degree wedge that I bought "used" that looked like it had been hit a couple of times as well. The Cleveland will be in my bag when I feel the vokey is "worn out".

It might be good to get a few, even if they're worn, because you can use them at the practice range.

No sense in burning up your wedge grooves hitting full shots on the range.
