A range session sparked this SL experiment of mine. I had bought some old clubs from Play it Again Sports and I was hitting the 5 iron very well.

The rest of the clubs were all over the place. I decided to check out the specs and found that the Lie angle was 58* and the length was 38.25 inches.

I decided to rip apart this old set and do an experiment.

First I decided on 267.5 grams for a head weight because I wanted to give them a little extra heft. I ground down the PW, 9, 8 and 7 iron to as close to 267.5 grams as I could get comfortably.

Next I used some lead fishing weights and layed them in the back of the cavity and used a torch to melt them down. Once the lead turned liquid it filled in the cavity somewhat. I just let them cool down, tapped them out of the cavity and used shafting epoxy to glue them back in.

I finished the clubs with Karma Multi Texture grips and couple wraps of masking tape. Blew on the grips on this morning and I was at the range today.

I was very impressed with all of the irons. There was one point I even said "Unreal" out loud at the way I was making crisp clean contact with the ball.

My WTF is 35.5 inches so I would imagine this would not be a very ideal set up for me on paper but at the range they worked great.

I'll be sure to do that. I've had two range sessions with positive results and I hope to hit the course this Saturday.

Other manufacturers have done this, but what it invariably leads to it less control with the short irons and less distance with the long irons.

With tweaked lofts there is no distance lost...

That is something one can figure out after a couple range sessions.

How did you adjust all lies to 58*?

They feel like a soft forged iron head and bent very easily. The only one that I would not have bent a 1/2* further was the pitching wedge. 4 1/2 degrees was about it's max I felt.

I have a Scotland Loft/Lie machine.

You like 5-6 degrees (flat) 8-PW? I am very surprised that you didnt snap a few hosels bending stainless that extreme.

I'd be digging the toe a foot deep.... and hitting hosel rockets with those specs.

Hope it works out for you. Pretty interesting experiment.

These were very soft if they were cast. They have the same bag chatter as most forged irons do. Maybe it was made of 304 or something along those lines. The pitching wedge was at its max bending point. I am either really good at bending irons or these irons were very easy to do so. I have checked and rechecked the lie angle and they are all at 58*. The PW had to be bent 4 1/2 degrees I think. They were already a couple degrees flat from "standard".

Just out of curiosity, how are the Karma multi-textured grips? I've been thinking of trying those out

They are find grips for under $2. They are not the nicest grip I've ever used but they are great for the price.

Had a 18 hole par 3 session yesterday. I never got to use anything in my bag over a 8 iron. They were solid none the less. I am sticking with them until I get an itch and have to do something else!

Wrong....loft is the primary determinant of carry.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
