Your sig has it right: you're wrong.

I do realize that, was just taking a simple approach to explain hitting down on the ball and the compression that happens when the clubface makes contact with the ball. Easier to for someone to understand than explaining all the physics involved in the deformation and all that.

actually you will get more spin the more you catch it clean. thats why its good for steep swingers to have a lot of bounce on their wedges...it makes the club sweep through the ball more than to chop down on it. im not saying you want to totally catch everything clean without a divot or anything... hitting down on it is not a great way to explain it cuz it kinda of implies swinging down very steeply.. you just want to hit the ball before you hit the ground..make good contact and the ball will spin.

hitting down on the ball = hitting the ball as the club is descending in my common sense brain.

What he said.

You need to swing fast enough as well. A 100 yard 5i won't stop on the green.

Just hit the ball correctly and the spin will happen. You don't have to try.

I agree with this. I never spun the ball until I started getting better at getting good contact. After that it just started happening. I am not a huge fan of the ball spinning back though, better to just get it to check hard than to spin back 5 feet. I always remember something Tom Watson said on his "playing lessons with the pros" - "I never made money with the ball coming back towards me"
