I recently played in one for the Ronald Mcdonald House, I paid nothing considering it cost $750 per team (that was the minimum). We got $75 gift cards to Callaway, sleeves of Pro V1x's and a ton of stuff, as well as a great dinner.

And just today we had one where our whole No.7 was sponsored by Jack Daniel's! It was a great time. Even though it was the slowest whole on the course. It was a outing for a small local sports bar.

So what's your craziest or most fun outing you've played in?

I went once to a DEA outing (my company sponsored it). Thinking it will be a serious event I quickly realized, that it won't How you might ask? When I noticed that the cart in a front of me, instead of golf bags strapped in in the usual spot had a huge garbage can strapped in, filled with ice and beer
Clubs were inserted sideways into the basket behind the seats
Needless to say - there was not much golf played that day. These guys know how to party... Scary thought though - I guess all of them were 'packing'. I made sure I don't piss anybody off by hitting into them, picking up a wrong ball etc. They had terrific prizes and raffles - including a cruise tickets for two !!!

I played in an enjoyable tournament last week...

In general, I don't like most tournaments because people are either too serious or not serious enough (i.e. breaking rules, in particular). And in the ones where people are "too serious," some 18-handicapper that shoots a net 54 always wins.

There's a tournament I'm dying to play in that's held each year at Oakmont (yes, THE Oakmont). It's $2300 for a team of 4 and includes playing at Oakmont, lunch, and a dinner banquet that night.

I have yet to be able to find 3 other people who would play or someone who could sponsor us but when I do, you can bet I'll be going. I'm not sure if they're going to have it next year b/c of the US Open, but I'm still hoping I can go some year.

Yeah the Newport Cup was great (no I'm not kissin a$$). I always find a way to work golf into a trip but this was my first golf only trip and I had a blast! I'm now looking forward to participating in more golf only trips now.

Yeah I play in men's club events on a regular basis and it seems to be the same group of guys winning the events, especially the skins and pins.

The Newport Cup is the only competitive golf event I play in each year. Other than that, I just play rounds for fun with friends.

I'm already looking forward to the 2007 Newport Cup, even if my team is 0-2 so far in the event. :/

Hey, me too!

The 2006 Newport Cup was the first tournament golf I have ever played (I play a couple of scrambles/year and have one Skins Game with some other buddies but nothing this intense) and it was by far the best tournament/outing I have ever played in. I played like (1-4-0) but had a great time. My preparation for the 2007 Newport Cup begins today.

Sold! You know anyone that could sponsor us so we don't have to fork out $800 a person or whatever it is? If I recall correctly, about 80% of the total fee is tax deductible.

If I play, I'd pay for myself. I don't think we're going to get a sponsor to pay us to play golf. We're not THAT good.

Hey! That's not that bad a price! $575 per person times four is the $2300 you said it costs. To play Oakmont! Plus the food & prizes! I guess its just one round of golf but hey, Pebble is $450 now & they don't have the Bud girls and aren't giving you anything for that matter!

I wasn't talking about paying us to play golf, I was thinking more along the lines of how some corporations or groups will sponsor teams in charity tournaments for the recognition\advertisement\etc. Of course, I'm sure they'd want to toss in a player or two but I think someone might be willing to do it. Nevertheless, when\if I get the application again, I'll be sure to let you know.

I think I misquoted the total price... it's $3200 instead of $2300... out of that $3200, $2800 is tax deductible (or $700 out of the $800 per person). I still don't think its that bad of a deal, especially because anybody can get on Pebble if they pay... not everyone can get on Oakmont.

I'm still very interested in playing this event. I was telling a buddy about it (scratch) and he was also really interested. Looking like maybe a good foresome. I'll e-mail you tomorrow.

    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
    • I got another one today....Number 17. Par 5 that has water left and right on the layup. I smacked a drive down the left side and got a little lazy on the layup and fanned my 6 iron. With 112 to a crowned green I got it to 3 feet and birdie!  Only 5 and 15 is left for this year!
    • Maybe I didn’t explain this properly. Back and front can be confusing.  There was no place in the bunker that didn’t have 2-3 inches of rain water in it, except for a small spot on the slope nearest the pin. If I had dropped there I would be moving 6-7 feet closer to the hole. Since my ball was just inside the bunker, farthest side from the hole, I dropped one club length backward, which brought me out of the bunker. I could not have hit from that deep of water. Are you saying I would have had to take a penalty stroke due to rain water?
    • Day 550, May 5, 2024 Got a good hour in with a typical (for me) two-stick setup: pool noodle angled in front, yardstick on the ground angled 45° behind me.
    • Day 130: Cinco de Mayo Day 7/24 of Full Speed Spectrum training. Difficult training day after struggling to certify my warmup yesterday, and today. Finished 13 mph lower than my training speed on Thursday. Hope to hit some balls today.
