I have a Taylormade Rescue 17 degree 2 hybrid, shafted with a Aldila Voodoo XSV8. It plays slightly too long for my liking (about 2 inches longer than my 3 iron) and is just a little uncomfortable, so I want to have it cut down a little. I know I could just adjust the lie angle, but I figure changing the length comes with the added benefit of better yardage gaps.

I know shortening the shaft will have some effect on its playing characteristics, but my question is, what are these effects going to be?

Less club head speed, the shorter the shaft the more difficult its going to be to whip the club around on your downswing. Also its gonna take time to get used to. I did the same thing with my hybrid and i found myself topping the ball A LOT. If i was you i would just choke up a tad bit. You may still lose some distance/speed, but you can also adjust your grip later instead of completely chopping it down

Swingweight change and a possible change to shaft flex. You might want to ask a good clubmaker in your area (or the shaft manufacturer) if his shaft should be trimmed at the butt end or the tip. Probably the butt end, but you never know.

I believe shortening the club at the "tip end" will alter flex. Trimming at the "butt end" shouldn't effect flex, but either way will change swingweight. Definitely agree with Bryan SD2, find someone who knows what they're doing!!!

It's going to change the kickpoint of the shaft though. That will alter the ballflight.

In a general sense, you're going to gain control and lose max distance. The distance loss may/could/should be offset by the fact that you'll hit it on the screws more often. I'd see a clubfitter and see what your options are - someone who knows the characteristics of your shaft and has seen you swing as well.
