I went to college fairly well ranked. The coach said "we graduated two seniors last year, so we have two spots available." I played in his little "trial" tournament, earned the first spot, and turned him down.

Any coach who grants players who were on the team last year an automatic spot in subsequent years doesn't care enough about winning in my book.

I agree.

Our coach had a clause.

"If you are a senior and you can't play in the top 5, you won't be on this team"

Thats how my high school was as well.
