I am looking for a new driver. Which would one choose for a mid handicapper looking for distance and accuracy, and fighting a slice?

Currently my burner is 9.5* and i find it goes a fair bit higher than i would like. I understand the R9 460 also has a high launch so am leaning toward the R9, then i can play with the weights to get a better launch. But will i lose much forgiveness with the R9. Maybe 1 in 20 drives hits toward the heel or toe, most of them are around the center.

Thoughts?

Have you considered the R9 SuperTri which has both MWT and the forgiving 460cc head?

Either way, you should try all three of the drivers at a launch monitor and see which one works best for you.

Try all three on launch monitor and on the range. The SuperTri to me had a much more hollow, dead sound to it that a lot of drivers seem to have adapted these days. Didn't like the feel of it at all compared to Burner or R9/R9-460. But that's just my opinion.

I went with the R9 460. I felt like it set up better. I liked the way it looks at address and it sounds and feels great. I would like to try out the Supertri... if the price came down.

i play the R9 original (420cc)
i like the FCT & the MWT in it

havent played much w the MWT tho, but the FCT is the real deal

not a fan of 460cc heads and i like a closed faced driver at address - the R9 has it all for me
and i can try different shafts all day if i want to, with the ease of a wrench turn

I have the R9 460 and just picked up the supertri. I don't think you can go wrong with either head in my opinion. Dropped a fubuki alpha into my supertri and it's absolutely insane!

Can you get, or make any shaft to fit into the head or do you need to buy a special shaft from TM? Eg- will a UST shaft fit in or do i need to buy the loft thingy and do that bit myself?

You just need to buy the sleeve and put it on the shaft of your choice then it fits right in.

The slice isn't going to be fixed by either driver since your current driver is already set at 2° closed. I think that 07 Burner is longer than both the R9 and R9 460. Probably because I hit a big ass draw with it. You could solve the ball flight issue with a simple shaft change. I prefer the R9 over the R9 460, never compared the two side by side but hit both and hit the R9 much better. I felt like I was bombing the R9 but was actually hitting it shorter than my 9015D.

I'll be the first to admit when i take time off golf, the slice comes right back! I am going to have to sort it out, which im hoping the SnT will help with. Mainly the Burner is just to bombey for me now. I can score 80 - 85 on my course hitting about 5 Fairways so obviously if i can hit some more i feel theres a couple strokes right there.

Have decided to get my swing right then choose one of these drivers. Thanks again for reminding me that a club wont fix the slice. Easy to get caught up sometimes by all the hype and ads.

Do you mean like they showed in the TM tour van video, where you gotta sand it and use epoxy and cut the shaft and re grip??? Yet to venture into that stuff lol

Well i figured the slice out. Wasnt swinging to the out and left the club face open a bit. Back to the shafting options, is it relatively easy to put a grip on, or reshaft your own clubs. Im fairly hands on with alot of projects etc. love building and using tools.

I was using the same driver as you 07 Burner. Was slicing everything. I went to get fitted for a driver and found out even though I had a stiff flex shaft it was too light in weight. The burner was stiff flex 50gram weight. I bought an R9 460 with a stiff 60gram weight and man what a difference. Hope this helps.

Hey man funny you say that. I tried out a J38 Bridgestone driver at the golf expo here on the weekend and the monitor was saying dead straight. Admittingly monitors can be dubious, and it was a low spin driver, but the stiff shaft in it was way stiffer than my burner. The burner is pretty flexy now i think about it.

It's weird how 10 grams more weight on a shaft makes that much of a difference. A lot less flexibility. With my swing speed averaging at 110 it really helps.

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.  
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day. 
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine. 
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
