I have the TM R9 460 with a "stiff" shaft. I played with this driver for the third time today and I have officially concluded that it is much too whippy. It feels very uncontrollable and I hit either a nasty snap hook with it, or it just sprays everywhere randomly.

I tried cutting it down to make it more controllable, but now it is too short. I want a new shaft. Badly. Only problem is I am on a budget and I have to idea shat shaft to get. For the info I swing the driver around 105mph and I have a 12 degree launch angle with about 3300rpms. I went to Golf Galaxy to get help but their shaft selection was lacking and the employees didn't seem to want to help me. Maybe someone here can?

whats your price range?
what would you like to see out of your new shaft?
how is your tempo? (a vid would be helpful too)

all "stiffs" are not alike
to me your launch angle seems fine, spin could come down some

If you are on a budget go with a UST Axivcore since they are on sale. You could also go cheaper by going with a UST Proforce V2 or a Grafalloy ProLaunch Red. I think Aldila is also having a sale but don't have much experience with their shafts except the VS Proto.

I have a pretty quick tempo, a budget of about $100 and I don't really want to change my launch angle or spin rate, I just want more control.

I was looking at the UST Proforce V2 (stiff flex), and I think that is what I'll go with. I just don't know if I want 65g or 75g

if you have a quick tempo and can really load the ball, the V2 would be ok for you
i would go with the 65g tho, as this shaft tends to play a little stiffer and not feel as responsive the heavier they get

the PL Red is a good option too, and on sale for $19 right now from Rockbottom golf

or maybe a TP version of a TM Shaft????

If the R9 driver is "too whippy" I would grab the driver, in your opinion, which isn't "too whippy" and take them side by side to the driving range. Why? Conclude with more than circumstantial evidence that the driver is indeed too whippy. Then take the two drivers to your local club maker or retailer. Why? Ask about the swing weight. Perhaps one is C6 and one is D4. Perhaps the tip is soft on one and quite stiff on the other. Perhaps the you have a high kickpoint on one and low on the other... There are myriad of things that could lead to "too whippy" of a club. If you have a quick transition from back to thru swing, and your tip is soft this could lead to what you are describing. Players with very high swing speeds (120+) and lack of consistent control will take a raw shaft and tip trim it by 1/2" to 1" or so until they find a perfect balance and great control. In general this will take an X shaft and make it an XX or an X+. Dustin Johnson, for example, uses this methodology to achieve more control because of the serious leverage he generates in the down swing.

IMHO, Taylormade stock shafts are more than capable of handling a 105mph swing without generating a "whippy" feel. I have four shafts for my two R9 drivers and have found that all are more than capable of handling my ss which is 116mpg at low end and when I crank is 123mph. I have the Fubuki 65, Motore, Motore F1 (TP) and the Aldila RIP (TP). All are X-flex and none are tip trimmed - just stock from Taylormade.

Good luck!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
