I`m a beginner golfer and just picked up a set of TM 09 Burner Regular Graphites.. are the R9s better suited for me? The shop had them for $50 more.. should I go back and get those instead?

Thanks

IMHO - as a beginner, just buy the club that fits your budget and don't even think about equipment once you've made your initial purchase. then, go out and find a teaching pro and commit yourself to 10 lessons at a minimum. then, make sure you do what they tell you without deviation - and above all practice gripping the club 30minutes per day. if after the lessons and the dedication to the practice and getting some grip caluses on your hand you find that you like the sport, and more importantly - you're good at it - then you can consider an upgrade to your equipment.

Thanks for your input. I've already had 4 lessons, been to the range many times over the summer and had calluses on both hands...I currently have a starter set and was looking to upgrade since there are some end of season deals.

Depending on your age, as well as how hard you swing your clubs, you might want to consider getting steel shafts over graphite shafts especially regular shafts. My first "adult" set were Titleist DCI 981 with graphite shafts and I loved them. But as I started playing more, and my game got better, I realized that I wasn't getting the control that I wanted, so I switched out to steel shaft Taylor Made R7's, and I hit them a lot better. You could take 5 near identical swings at a ball with graphite clubs and they could go different places. But I would try out both.

Thanks, another option I have are the Bridgestone J33s Forged Combo Irons (Steel). Can't find much info about them but they are available..suitable for a high HC?

go for it! shortly after i first began golfing i went straight from my beginner set of nike fairway shovels to mizuno blades. i'll never forget it... i went to the superstore, told the guy i wanted to buy these mizuno blades, he asked my handicap, i told him i didn't keep one but that i averaged around 90 and he said i should not get the blades. my argument was simple... "how can i expect to become a 'better player' if i don't play a 'better player's' golf club?" he didn't have a come back...

if you are determined to get better, go for it! be forewarned... you'll get instant feedback when you miss the sweet spot... it will sting and the ball will dribble off low and right (if off toe), and you will be embarassed... BUT, it will send you to the range determined to find that setup that then finds that sweet spot.

You should know when re-shafting the R9 driver, you need to buy the shaft sleeve adaptor (cost $40). For me that's an extra cost that I don't want to spend.

BTW Burner 09 is a decent driver for a beginner. Good choice.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
