I hunt down the fairway markers and then walk off the distance. Sometimes the water sprinkler heads will have the distance also.

Driver:Titleist 910 D2
3 Wood: Titleist FT Fairway Woods (Old club)
Irons: Callaway Hot X-24 4-PW , SW
Putter: Odyssey Two Ball
Ball: Bridgstone e-6

Pick where I want to land it, check the range with a GPS to within 5 yards or so, remember how hard an X-yard swing feels like with whatever club I want to use, then rehearse and go for it. That's worked out to some pretty stiff approaches for me lately. My approach shot misses are very rarely distance, but left or right.

      Yes.  Did he not hit the range before the round? When my first few pre-round drives aren't what I expect, the first thing I check is my driver settings, in case they changed.  I am on my second adjustable driver and I am still not trusting that golf gremlins don't change it between rounds. The second thing I check is my alignment and setup, and that is far more often the culprit than my settings. In any case, there are some simple things that I imagine should be on a professional player's pre-round checklist that I am surprised when they aren't.  One of those is the settings for any adjustable clubs.
