Hi Mike. Welcome! I hope you're able to enjoy a bunch of those wonderful Scottish golf courses. Maybe one day I'll get the honor.

Do you get to play regularly in the winter months?

Hi,

Yes I do play every week, come rain or shine I get out and do my best, at the moment it's very frosty so we need to watch the greens but I'll get in 9 holes at some stage - a few of us are hoping to play St Andrews in Scotland next summer and that will be my first visit there.

Hey Mike! Glad to hear golf is still going strong in Ireland.

Are there a lot of courses to play in Ireland? I've seen some reviews saying Ireland has some of the best. Is it true? Might have to make a trip over there to play when I go to Scotland next year...

what course do you play out of, Irish people?

Ireland has some of the best courses in the world! Tiger comes here every year before the British Open - Waterville is a favourite of his (as well as the late Payne Stewart)

www.top100golfcourses.com

Irish Couses:
#2 Royal County Down (Walker cup 2007)
#13 Royal Portrush
#19 Ballybunion
#42 Lahinch (Old)
#47 Waterville
#48 Portmarnock (Old) (Walker Cup 1991)
#51 European Club

Not on this list but other great courses:

K-Club (Ryder Cup 2006)
Carton House (Irish Open 2005, 2006)
Mount Julliet (Amex/CA WGC 2002,2004)
Druids Glen (Irish Open)
Cork Colf Club
Old Head of Kinsale (spectacular)

There are something like 400 courses in Ireland which is unbelievable for a small country/island. I think it's the highest proportion of courses to people in the world.

I play Loughgall. It's crap.

Walked Royal County Down for the Walker cup though, and It was absolutley the mose stunningly well manicured course I've ever seen. I dream of playing it someday. (Winter green fees are only something like £50!)

    • I got two trips lined up this year.  First, Pinehurst next month. Qual Ridge, Mid Pins, Southern Pines 😁, Mid South, Talamore. I am looking forward to playing Southern Pines since it got redone.  Second, a trip to eastern Wisconsin in early August. Whistling Straights, Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills.
    • You are probably doing the right thing in having more fairway woods or hybrids in your bag than irons. Just easier to maximize ball speed for you swing speed to get the proper gaps.  A driver is teed up, so you have more leeway there. The 7-wood is probably more optimized for carry for you. A slower swing speed needs higher launch and spin to keep the ball in the air. With the 3-wood, it probably launches too low with not enough spin to keep it in the air.  If you are not going to go get lessons, or do some sort of swing speed training, go get fitted for clubs. Clearly your mix-match of equipment is not optimized.
    • 32 putts are average for a single digit handicap golfer. Limiting three putting is the biggest task. Speed control is the most important aspect of putting. Probably the 2nd most important is aim.  The putter is going to rotate open a bit on the backstroke. It might stay square to the arc of the putting stroke, but that does mean the face opens up a bit on the backstroke when measured against where the face is oriented at address. Go get a putter lesson as well.
    • Keep us up to date with your findings, please.  I'm not looking for a putter, but I'm sure you're not alone in your venture to get the putts rolling better.
