Ive recently been struggling with my swing, think ive been swinging too flat which has resulted in me hooking the ball, both off the tee and longer irons! So i went to the range to try and work things out, so i started to swing steeper to see what results id get. What i got was a higher ball flight and it going arrow straight or a very slight fade! I was really happy with this so i took the swing to the club comp yesterday and shot 80! My golf buddy says the swing looks really steep but he was impressed with the results and quality of the ball strike! Does it really matter what the swing looks like as long as its consistant? Look at Jim Furyk, he has a ugly swing but gets good results! Your feedback would be gratefully recieved!

Casper, I'll bite. The short answer is that the only thing that matters is the path, face angle, and speed of clubhead thru impact. Now the complicated part. Finding the most repeatable, energy efficient way to consistently reach that few inches thru the ball. A laymen would look at Furyks swing and think ugly. A teaching pro would see his path thru the slot from top of backswing to impact and see pure beauty. I think it all depends on your long term goals. Everyone can make a physical change to compensate for an incorrect move that will lead to better results. But will that compensation hurt your ultimate goals? Example-I'm self taught over 20 yr. golfer and have never been under 9 index. Because I'm self taught, yrs later I now know what I've done to be able to have semi decent contact. I have a terrible over the top move and out to in swing path, but I've compensated by closing my stance strong grip and no wrist hinge. Result is a straight ball flight with alot of waisted energy loss of power and inconsistency. I can't afford to dedicate myself to a coach and rebuild my swing, and at my age I've resigned to just having the most fun I can. But if your young enough, and have the resources, and love the game. I would definitely get a pro-video analasys and find out exactly why a steeper swing gave you better results. You will probably find it is a compensation for an incorrect position. If not just stick with the new swing thought and see where it takes you. Like I said it's all gonna be based on your long term goals. Hope I helped

yeah thanks, the long term goal is to get to single figures, but i do hit the ball far with the new swing so im hoping long term it will be the right way to go! just think i need to keep repeating it so i can be more consistant which will hopefully result in consistant lower scoring! I compleatly agree about jims swing, its so consistant, and as long as the end product is what you want, who cares!

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
