I play 90% on desert golf courses. I like my clubs and do not wish to bang the sh*t out of the sole of the club if I happen to be "on the rocks". There are a few holes where we can get into rocky areas or gravel desert spots. Here's the question-

Is it legal to add tape to the bottom, sole, of a club to hit off rocks/gravel/etc? This would not be to improve my shot or lie but to protect my club. This would be done on an individual shot and then take the tape off. I'm thinking duct tape here : ) Though that tape might not do much to protect from a "big" rock, but it would save the sole of the club from small nicks and chunks.

I'd sure as heck do this on an "everyday" round when not in a tournament or playing for more then just a score/practice that day.

I'm afraid that would be contrary to the Rules. See Dec 4-1/5.

Interesting question. Sounds like above is the answer.

Most the people I know who play courses like that have a dedicated club for hitting out of the desert. Yeah not the optimum way to address the issue but I guess taking the rules of golf into consideration the most cost effective. Whenever I have a bad break like this (lost ball in deep rough etc etc) I always go to the "dumb arse why did you hit it there in the first place?" rational! LOL

ya, I figured as such, thanks.

May go with an old 8 iron for the "on the rocks" shot : )

I'm still gonna try this in practice rounds though. No real reason to waste a club in practice.

    • Day 58: night putting session for about an hour. Started with lag putting and ended with putts inside 9’. I need to work on putts from 6-12’, but in a solid spot overall.
    • Birdied a different #6 today (incidentally, also a par-5, but not the same one on which I previously birdied).  Here's the funny thing though:  it's the par-5 that caused me to post my "how do I avoid bogeys?" on par-5s recently.  So I guess I still haven't parred that hole.
    • Day 20, May 24.  Played 18 today, very poor ball driving.  One GIR, and it was a 4-wood from the rough.  Several other instances of hitting a green on a full swing (and at least one full swing motion -- a 50% UW) that wasn't for GIR.   Still shot an 87 and even had a birdie (chip-in).
    • Welcome to TST.  I spent a bit of time in the UK but I had to look up Wagon Wheels.  Don't think I ever saw them.  Had to Google to see.  Couple similar items in US but Google says they are different. 😁
    • Day 264 5-24 Worked on getting chest through and arms down infront of chest. Contact isn't great yet but on video looking better.
