I am running a golf tournament for my Father-in-law who is battling cancer... I need some tips/ ideas.. I am already using a players package which will inculde a tee shot from the red tee's, a Mulligan, and a Throw ( which can be used as an extension of your shot)... I am trying to find a golf store who would want to donate a Driver or Putter so I can raffle off... There will also be a Long Drive and closest to the pin contest. I will be giving out prizes for that as well..

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Have you looked at hole in one sponsor? Car dealership (or in your locale a boat dealer?) might be helpful as well. Sell chances at the hole in one - sponsor could cover the insurance cost. They get the advertising for their money and you get the money from the chances.

Some ideas…

You really want to use the language “Charitable Golf Outing to Benefit (your Father-in-Law’s name)”

Talk to a tax attorney, or do some research on your own, concerning how one would go about getting recognized as a 501(c)3 entity for this particular outing. Once you are legally recognized as a charitable entity my feeling is that most, if not all, of the golf stores with which you try to set up a deal should be happy to donate some of their wares as they will be allowed to write-off the charitable contributions come tax time.

Of course, this sounds like a lot of technical work, but I’d hate to see you get into some kind of “money trouble” trying to help-out your Father-in-Law.

Something else you could look @ doing is trying to get sponsers for holes where say they give you x amount of money and you put a sign up @ a hole so they can get their name out. signs to put up can be very inexpensive and sometimes a shop will make them for you for free if you put their name out their.

What I wan to know is, even though this is a charity tournament what kind of stuff do you guys like to get when you show up? Set of tee's, ball markers, towels, etc..

I want to to be a great tourney for a great cause..

Good question.  Even though golfers know that an event is for charity it is still nice (and appreciated) to get some sort of gift.  I like something that lasts - a hat or towel with a logo or embroidered with the event name and date are two of my favorites.  I've been lucky enough to play in a large charity event the last couple of years (we're talking hundreds of thousands raised) - and of all the stuff that we get at this event the hats are my favorite.  Just plain cotton caps with the name and date on them - but everytime I pull one out to wear it reminds me of how lucky I've been to support a good cause.

A towel is a good bet. I've been on the planning end of many of these and towels and umbrellas (more money) are always a hit. Balls are best if the golfers are hackers (better golfers want "their" ball.) If you do give away balls, the best thing we ever did was have an open bowl with charity's logo balls and tell people at registration that they could take up to two balls. Many of us took none. Those who liked getting free balls got some. Less than half of the people playing took balls. Saved a lot of money.

Probably balls and or ball markers. On course - someone travelling around in a cart asking players if they need anything and possibly handing out Cubans and single malt scotch at a hole where a barbecue is set up grilling appetizers and otherwise distracting people at the hole-in-one holes - yes that actually happened at an event in Calgary. I hit the water with my tee shot and still felt like a winner.

One of the best ones I went too had a massage chair set up on one of the holes that was always backed up on anyway. $5 for 5 minutes with all the money donated to the charity.

What a nice thread. Well done on continuing the charitable golf tourney. Agree with towels, ball markers, and divot repair tools. People usually show up to the course with balls and tees already (golfers tend to be particular when it comes to golf balls and tee color/height). I was so pleased to get a golf towel at the last charity scramble I participated in--my golf towel had definitely seen better days and was way past needing to replace it. People often forget to bring a divot repair tool, or can't find it in their bag. The golf course you are holding the event would also appreciated the repair tool gift idea.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
