Let me start by saying I am very new to the game and just want to do this for fun. I am an big guy, not tall but like a fire plug. I am 5`10" and wear a 58 inch chest sports coat. My upper arms are 22", and very broad shouldered. Due to years of football and other activities my range of motion is sad. Is there anything I can do to help with my swing.

Agree with flexibility. Get a basic yoga DVD and do the stretches starting 10 minutes a day and work up to 30 minutes a day. I'm guessing that you have very powerful legs/hips. Use your legs to initiate the downswing and into impact and release.

Here's Angel Cabrera--big guy, hits it a long way. see how he pushes forwards to push his left hip forward to initiate the forward swing and then pushes off the ground to jump into impact. Disregard Johnny Miller's reason on why he pulled the drive.

I don't mean any disrespect but I don't think Angel Cabrera is a good example of the "push your hips forward" and "jumping" technique. He transfers a lot of weight over to the back foot during the backswing and keeps most of it there into impact. His left hip rotates out of the way more than anything else. You can tell by the way his front foot rotates during impact that there isn't a lot of weight over it. Angel is more a student of staying behind the ball and rotating around the back foot IMHO.

Better FO view of Cabrera. I agree, he does get over his back foot on the backswing, but I think he pushes forward a lot and straightens his legs (pushes off the ground) plenty into impact.

His instructor calls it a cross-lateral shift, but it's a shift with the front hip forward

    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
