Was in golfsmith today getting my wedges regripped. (I highly recommend that Winn xi7 for all "feel" clubs). While I was waiting, I was playing around the putting area, tying not to buy another Cameron. However, I was blown away by the number of "chippers" there were.

For those who don't know (and i was in this category until this morning), the chipper is some type of wedge putter hybrid. It looks like a very lofted hybrid club with a putter grip. Based on the point of sale marketing materials, you are supposed to use it with a putting stroke and depending on how hard you swing you can putt, chip and pitch.

I really want to know who this clubs are targeted to? Unless I missed something, the chipping stroke is fundamentally the same as a putting stroke. If you can't chip with a 9 or wedge, i highly doubt that this will do you any favors. In fact, I tried to chip some with it out of the Golfsmith fringe and the results were horribly inconsistant. Admittedly, I didn't chunk any, but the ball didnt come out with any spin and distance control was impossible. These clubs may have had less feel than any club club I have ever tried.

Even more mind-numbing was the number of companies who had a "chipper". I saw at least five brands there so this must be a trend. Is there really a need here or are companies just trying to take advantage of golfers who can't chip and are looking for a quick fix.

One more thought for a football Sunday-- what's up with all of these shots of team's owner after any big play? Who wants to see a ultrarich guy giving an awkward high five. I think that we should assume that they are excited by the plays. How bout just a nice crowd shot of some fat 40 year olds with painted chests, men in cheese hats or god forbid, a cheerleader?

One of my little brothers uses this club. I give him a goofy look everytime he gets it out.

He does do alright w/ it, but I keep telling him it's stupid to use it. Why not get good at chipping w/ the traditional clubs?

You wouldn't look stupid and it would allow a different club to be in the bag.

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
