So I have been posting and creating threads for the last couple of months regarding club fitting. In particular that I believe that everyone should get fitted, even though I had not done so. This weekend I took a stride to taking my own advice. I have decided to dedicate as much time as I could to getting better at this ridiculous but amazing game we call golf. My first step was to get my clubs fitted for the swing I currently have. The idea was to get them fitted and then to take one or two lessons every month going forward.

There is a facility relatively close to my house that has decided to close in it's hitting bays during the winter so they are able to offer lessons and eventually allow the general public to hit balls while it's cold outside. So needless to say in a climate where it can reach below -30 Degrees C this can be somewhat useful for the golf nuts, as long as you go on a relatively mild day. So I decided that this would be the place that I would go and get fitted as well as invest in lessons for the remainder of this year. So I signed up for a fitting lesson and a lesson to follow the week following.

The fitting wasn't quite what I was expecting but nonetheless it should help. We only checked the irons to determine how the club was contacting the ball through impact. After the check we determined that my 4,5,6 irons needed to be adjusted by 1* upright and my 60* wedge needed to be adjusted 1* flat. During the club check The Pro (this is what I will call him) saw some instant and basic changes that needed to take place in order for me to swing the club better.

The Pro, an Australian guy who seemed to like to speak with his head tilted and with one eye closed (perhaps it was due to the blinding sun and snow filled field behind me) pointed out some basic issues. Had I seen my swing on video previous to this session, I probably would have been able to pick the issues out....but would have failed miserably attempting to fix it.

He wanted to start out with some basic setup and take away fixes first. The first being my grip (original grip was too weak) as well as having the grip of the club starting on the left hand side of my zipper which in turns lowers my right shoulder (this will ultimately help stop the casting and flipping of the club at the bottom of the swing). To keep this post as short as possible (or not extremely longer than it already is) I have bullet pointed some of the other issues:
  • Coming off the ball too early in the take away, wants to see a more one piece take away
  • I was rolling my wrists on the take away, which causes my club head to be WAY inside and causing an overall flat golf swing.
  • My body is firing way to fast for my hands - this to be worked on after the initial portions are fixed.

I have a bunch of mirror work and practice once the range opens up on the 15th of Feb. before my next lesson - scheduled for Feb 27th. I will try to keep this updated for anyone that enjoys listening to other peoples boring stories and painful stories of trying to learn to play this silly game.

I don't want to get fitted until I have lessons and a repeatable swing. Another thing that bothers me is that I swung my driver at 89-92 mph which was borderline Reg and stiff flex. I know a new driver is probably coming this year, but until I am comfy with a swing and bring up my speed into the mid-high 90's I just don't see the benefit. I sure do want something new though.
