Obviously there's Pinehurst/Southern Pines.

Also the RTP/triangle area, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

The triad west of the RTP (Greensboro/W-S) and Asheville and Nags Head.

Charlotte?

What else am I missing?

So

Pinehurst/SP - a more gentrified quieter smaller version of MB without the beach.

Triangle Area - decent courses, some university courses, spread out.

Nags Head - resort courses.

Triad - decent number of courses, good bang for the buck.

Ashville - not many courses but nice granola crunchy area to visit.

Wilmington - most of the courses seem like they're private.  Do they let non members play?

Brunswick County, NC, just across the state border from Myrtle Beach SC must qualify as a "golf cluster". The Villages of Shallotte, Calabash etc have dozens of golf courses in a small geographic area: Rivers Edge, 27 holes at Carolina National, St James Plantation (4 courses), Leopards Chase, Tigers Eye, Panthers Run and Lions Paw, Oyster Bay, 3 courses at Sea Trail, 27 holes at Thistle, Farmstead, Crow Creek, Brunswick Plantation, Lockwood, Bald Head Island, 27 holes at Sandpiper, two courses at the Pearl...

The Sandhills area which includes the towns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Sanford, etc. Some of the courses are Pine Needles, Pinehurst, Tobacco Road and the Pit.

Ill second the Sandhills area. I have played Little River and FoxFire up there. I wrote reviews in my signature under the "Courses I have played" section.

    • Day 21 - 2026-01-10 More mirror work focused on hip.
    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
    • Day 150 1-10 focus on arching the wrist and getting the ball to go left. Recorded, hit foam balls.
    • Day 467 - 2026-01-10 Practiced at Pinehurst every day I was there, and before Junior Elite this morning I got fifteen minutes of backswing checks in the mirror in.
