First off thank you to everyone that told me to get a fitting in my previous thread about getting a new driver. I went today and purchased a new driver, Cobra S2.

I had previously knew I was going to get a new driver and had hit some of the drivers @ Dicks Sporting Goods and to say that their launch monitor is horrible would be an understatement. I had hit multiple clubs there such as the Adams Speedline, The Cleveland Launcher, S2 offset, S2 adjustable, 910 and 909. The clubs that I thought I hit the best were def not the right clubs for me and my swing. I thought that I would need a reg flex and a 10.5* to help get a higher launch angle since I currently hit a really low drive with my Callaway Hyper X 9*. Much to my suprise I actually need a stiff flex and a 9.5* gave me the best launch angle on the stock shaft on the Cobra S2.

Basically Im just super excited about my new driver as I went out to the range and hit every drive dead straight aprrox 240 @ the neutral setting on the club. I dont think I have ever hit that many straight drives in a row and thought that I just had a horrible swing with my driver cause I hit most my other clubs pretty well and my game off the tee was def my weakest part of my game(i used to put about 3 balls ob a round and a few in the trees leaving me punch shots out of the trees with out being able to advance the ball)since I normal miss is a slice but when I was hitting it good it was approx 220 with a 15 yrd fade.

Thanks again everyone that insisted on me paying the few extra bucks for a fitting.

They were going to charge 50 bucks for the fitting but since I bought the driver from them the waived the cost.

Don't be weary of simulators, just always bring your old sticks to compare.

I wouldn't say they 'juice' the monitors, just alot of time it's calibrated poorly. Trackmen are almost ALWAYS on point though. If you find a store with a trackman, go to them.

I think getting fit for EVERY club in your bag is the smart thing to do. By getting fit you're not going to cure a terribly swing or anything like that, but you're going to eliminate alot of misses that you'd probably have with a stock club or something not right for you. This is especially true for irons.

also..GET FIT FOR YOUR PUTTER. EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR PUTTER. GO BACK AND GET FIT.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

Question, I have a 4W I want to put a new shaft in.  I really dont like the stock shaft.  Can I take it into a store with a simulator and can they determine the best shaft for me?  I assume most places have a variety of shafts to try?

Thanks!

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
