I'm not really sure, just trying to make sense of the situation...

The other week I went to a local pro shop that does a lot of customizations and reshaftng, custom fitting, etc. After talking for a while he said that the best thing I could do right now is $200+ down the road. It sounded good to me but once I thought about it, I very well may be using these irons just for this year before upgrading because I'm dedicating myself to get down to around an 8 in the next year and a half.

Was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts because it almost seems uneeded to reshaft irons when I may be getting new ones in the new future that would cost not much more than that.

Thanks for your time.

To spend over $200 on reshafting slingshots seems silly to me unless you do keep them for a few years (which you can, as I know several single digit handicap players who use them). A lot of pro shops will take the fitting cost off of a set of irons you buy from them, so i would just pick the ones you want to use for the next several years, get fit and enjoy for only a little bit more than what you would pay to have your sub $200 clubs reshafted.

Keep in mind you can sell your current irons on ebay and make approx $150-200 to throw toward your new fitted irons. If you reshaft and then buy new you just threw away $200+

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Your sig says Slingshot's +1", what shafts do you have now and what does your club maker want to do for $200+?

My gut reaction is that your Slingshot's aren't worth re-shafting, but that might be unfair on my part.  Nike makes a quality product and if you really like them it doesn't matter what they're worth on the open market.

I went the new irons route. $350 to reshaft my Hogan Apex with the shafts I needed/wanted. I bought my new set of Bridgestone J36 Combos, brand new for under $300 with the shafts I was going to put in my Hogans.

yea, exactly what I thought...over time re-shafting a 300 dollar set of iron for $200+ seemed near useless.

Ahh True Temper Speed Step Superlite S is what it says on the shaft. I bought them already with the extra inch added.

I'm going to try to get around to hitting some different irons as I get some more time. I like the irons themselves, but I really am not sure if theres a set out there that I would like even more. I'm not sure.

Did you get fitted or fit yourself and felt you needed 1" over?  Was that just the way they were and you got a deal on them?  I'm wondering because if the pro shop is just going to "re-shaft" shorter to fit you than that is a quick cheap DIY project.

I like your idea of doing nothing to your present set and hitting a bunch of other irons to get a feel for what you like.

no, I wast officially fitted for the extra inch, but at the particuar place I got them, me and the saleman agreed I'd need an extended shaf (because I am 6'4" ;) ) and yea, in their "plus 1"/2" rack" they had these, I hit them and I got them. wasnt as into it as I am now, as far as all the different equipment goes, but whatever.

thanks, I'll keep you guys posted on what's going on.

Nothing against Slingshots, but I think tws1098 and dbwood are on target. A set of premium shafts, plus the cost of labor, could easily exceed the cost of your Slingshots. If you get custom fitted for a set of irons, you can get them from the factory for about the same cost as an off-the-rack set. (If you want exotic shafts or grips, the cost will be higher).

As far as reshafting goes, if you replace high-grade shafts with other high-grade shafts, you can sometimes sell the "pullouts" for enough to partially pay for the reshaft. I suspect, however, that the resale value on used stock Slingshot shafts would be very small.

Also, early spring is time for golf expos, and tent sales of major golf retailers. If you want an iron set from a year or two back, and know the shaft you need, you might be surprised to find your upgrade irons setting in the aisle for a good price.

    • Really interesting you say that. As my swing has improved I'm starting to struggle with pulling left. It looks like a "draw", but it has more to do with face than path, as I'm pretty close to neutral to slightly out to in most of the time. I've also moved the ball considerably further forward in my stance than I used to, so it makes sense the face would be further shut at impact than before.  Now I think of it, I've been compensating by aiming by an uncomfortable amount to my right, which causes my brain to panic on the downswing. I might try opening face at address and get used to that.
    • Day 13 (13 May 25) - Nice break in the rain just after mid-day, so got outside to continue the trail hand drill - moved up to 7i but still with hard foam balls.  Starting to see a smoother transition into the downswing and more consistent ball first contact.   Kept the swings to about 3/4 speed as I work on this small adjustment in the swing.
    • Day 6: Worked on my putting stroke by hitting putts using only my right hand.
    • I've got pretty big hands but I've also felt the challenge of ensuring the grip is in the fingers resulting in a not on purpose stronger grip. I've been making some swing changes that was resulting in the natural feeling at impact being a closed face. My grip has always been fairly strong. Not trying to sound like an asshole or anything, but the answer for me at least was just to start taking the grip from a weaker starting point! I have a pretty ingrained hand and wrist setup when I take my grip. I just started turning the club to have an open face when I start my getting the grip in the pinky routine. Has been working nicely. Lets me have the grip in my fingers and achieve a more neutral grip.
