The 3 wood I bought on online is reg. flex instead of stiff like my 5 wood. I was wondering if I could just have it tipped (maybe from 43" to 42"?) to make it play firm/stiff and then it will also be around the same length as my 5 wood.  Am I on the right track here or no? Do I have a different option to get the same effect? I do not want to send it back or change shaft.

Thanks!

PS: tried doing a search but I couldnt narrow the subject enough to get anything useful out of the results.

One inch of tipping is a lot.... as you know, there is a lot more to flex than at the tip.

I'd return the club or pick up an older model, new shaft at a good price.

How does it typically translate? I don't mind it bringing the ball flight down a little (i was thinking that was another thing tipping does). I am just going off of little bits I have heard here and there, so if someone could show me a thread or enlighten me on what tipping does and how much I would want to do (or do I want to take some off from both ends?), etc.

I am loathe to tipping fairway shafts. In '97, I had Ping tip a driver shaft .5 inches and that sucker was tight at the bottom. It had a tough time getting in the air - long but low.

I would play with it as it is before you do anything -- and then decide.

Just remember, you can always tip more. But if you tip too much, you can't put it back. If you decide to tip, I'd start at 1/4 inch. Remember, cutting will also affect the balance of the shaft -- or swingweight.

Sounds good, cutting from the butt end will also firm it up slightly or no?

Depends on shaft and its characteristics - but in general, one would think so. I'd tip as little as possible or better, throw the question to a clubmaker.
