Hi everybody, I am new here. I am considering to take away my 3 wood from the bag and use a #2 hybrid instead (taylor made dual), the reason being that I never use the 3wood from the fairway and generally hit irons and hybrids better than woods. Do you think I am going to lose a lot of distance?

Many thanks

How can you lose distance if you never use the 3 wood anyway? What you carry in your bag is your choice, if you never use a club pull it and put one in you will use.

Golfchief is right but it does make me wonder. An 11 handicap usually has situations where a fairway wood off the tee is the smart play, or to reach a par 5 in two. If you are a short but straight hitter, a four wood and a 2 hybrid might make sense. For most people the difference between a driver and a 2 is anywhere from 25 to 50 yards. That is a pretty big gap.

I would take the hybrid, personally I feel so much more comfortable hitting my hybrid than a fairway wood, I think it's so much easier to get it up, instead of topping it or something, which I used to do with my fairway woods.

Hybrids are what it is all about now!

If I had to use a 3 wood from the fair way or rough...Must be shallow faced.

2 Hybrid will give you a comparable distance to a 5 wood, maybe a little longer. Shouldn't you be taking the 5 wood out of your bag instead?

I now use a 16* 2 hybrid and have only lost 5-8 yards compared to my 3 wood. I feel it has to do with contacting the sweetspot more often and I have more control with it. It also has better trajectory and so far i'm happy with it. May not be for everyone but it works for me.

Why don't you use the 3-wood? Problems with it off the fairway? A lot of people struggle with the 3-wood off the deck because it just doesn't have enough loft. Most 3-woods have between 13*-15* loft which is not enough unless you have 100+ mph swingspeed.

Personally I'd put a 4-wood in the bag with about 17* loft. Easy to hit off the deck with very little loss of distance over the 3-wood. If you want a cheap experiment go to ebay and pickup a orlimar 4-wood in 17* loft for about $15

I carry both a 2 hybrid and a 3 wood. The difference in distance is not huge but the ball flight and workability is. If I am playing a tight fairway I will hit the hybrid, but if I need to work the ball I will pull 3 wood. I also find it easier to hit the hybrid clean from the fairway.

I used to play a Taylormade hybrid but switched to the Bridgestone and havent looked back since. I gained about 10 yards with the J33.

    • I usually like to fix the face, first, as the path is most often the compensation for the open face rather than the other way around. If you could get some good down-the-line and face-on video in slow motion, it'd go a long way toward helping. It's tough to see the face and I think the face-on view would show that you're not turning as much as you could/should.
    • Day 86 (26 Jul 25) - Down at the beach place, had kept the clubs with me after playing yesterday.  Spent time this afternoon checking them over and brushing grooves on the wedges and irons.  Spent a few minutes working thru the swing process…working in slo mo through backswing and proper weight shift.

I've been Playing Golf for: 10 years, 1 year consistently  My current handicap index or average score is: 100 My typical ball flight is: fade The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: inconsistent ball strike   I caught the bug about a year ago and have been playing roughly once a week. Have been getting better with my short game and putting but my ball striking from tee and fairway lets me down. Had my first lesson last month which identified an over the top swing compensated by an open club face. Have been trying everything to get on plane over the last month. Have found that using a bend and press into my left leg as the trigger for my downswing coupled with finding the turn and rotation in both my arms to release the club properly has helped my get nearer to the correct plane. Video below is where I am with it currently. Haven’t taken this new swing to the course yet! Any comments or suggestions are welcome  Videos:  I've been Playing Golf for: 1 year properly  My current handicap index or average score is: 100 av score
    • That's always been the deal. You put in the work hyper focused on ONE or at most two things, so that you don't have to think about anything except a single feel or the target or something on the course.
    • Blind squirrel finds a nut and putted well. no, I decided to play a round being athletic rather than paralyzing myself with swing thoughts. I have no clue if I was doing what I worked on. It was the last day and I was tired of freezing at the top of the swing not know if one of four outcomes were going to happen.
