Okay, I am planning on upgrading my eight year old driver this spring and going to a club fitter to get properly fit for a new one, I would like to the R11 but will defer to his judgment.  The other thought I had was whether or not I should also get fit for new irons.  I have some nike slingshots that I play and like except I am getting tired of looking at steam shovels every time I address the ball.  I would also like to get properly fitted irons.

Should I break up the upgrades into this spring and next spring or just go all in.  Has anyone gone all in and had trouble adjusting to the new irons, what kind of adjustment period should I expect.

I am sure there are a bunch of other questions that I can't think of right now so if you have any additional info, just fire away.

Thanks for the help.

Matt

I recently upgraded my driver as well. I was under the guise that I wanted the R11, went and hit every driver off the shelf... I walked away with a R9. I hit it further, and straighter than any other club I hit including the R11. Saved a couple hundred bucks and got the club that works for me. I wouldnt pigeon hole yourself, hit a few drivers than you can make the best decision for your game... good luck!

If it were me, I'd just hit all of the drivers and irons you can, and see if something clicks.  I recently bought the new Burner 2.0 irons and was playing the r7s for about 4 years.  I just really liked the way the Burners felt when I hit them.  Whatever makes you the most confident is what makes sense to go with.  Coach where I play says "it's the indian shooting the bow, not the arrows in the quiver."  If the indian feels great about the arrows, he'll shoot more confidently :-)

God bless,

Ryan

    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
