Have been a keen golfer for about 16 years, though a big break for the last 3-4. Finally there is time to spend some time on the course and am hoping to drop from 8 to 2-3 hcp within 2011. Since I have been absent for so long, the equipment area feels to me like a jungle, and am hoping that the forum can suggest irons for me to try out.

I have been using Big Bertha irons and found them very easy and forgiving, though maybe not the most accurate. So I am interested in a set of irons and wedges, maybe a driver.

Please help

Thanks

If we knew the current club mix in your bag, and the shaft types, we might be able to help you.

What's your swing speed and shot shape? Do you want new clubs, or will you consider used ones?

Honestly, you're probably better off to head to your favorite golf shop and just see what's available.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Uh... what's your budget?  Do you have a brand preference?  Do you prefer forged or cast irons?  The thing is, all major manufacturers make great products, it comes down to preference.  Get fitted (you will hear this a lot) and decide what kind of coin you are willing to drop.  if you can play to an 8 with your Berthas, then you probably don't need anything game improvement.  My preference would be Pings or Mizunos (those are the 2 brands I play almost exclusively) with the new i15s or MP-63 being at the top of the list.  Wedges, Vokeys are of course great, but loot at Callaway offerings if you want forged.

I had my swing speed measured once, but that is a while ago. Will visit a pro shop as soon as possible and analyze it again, though it may be a bit rusty as I have not played for a while.

I would love a fitted set of clubs, but that will most likely be ridiculously expensive here in Norway. My budget is approximately 800-1000 dollars. I will keep my vokey oil can wedges and newport 2 putter, love them.

    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
