I just want to know what everyone's method or secret is to to taking what they do at the range to the course. I can hit great at the range but on the course I stink. is it the pressure of being on a course, maybe the grass as opposed to a mat, although even off a tee I'm horrible and at the range I'm far less horrible LOL. Just want to know some tricks or advice.

Thank You

Very common problem. Most people hit fat, and mats are very "forgiving" of fat shots.

So, you have the option to move to So. Cal. where I predict all our courses will be artificial turf due to our water shortage.

Actually, the ground is so dry now that most of the rough areas are like hitting off a range mat. Rough is getting easier to hit from than the fairways. . .problem solved.

Second tip is to practice being on the course. Unless you are trying to learn to hit a certain shot don't use the same club for consecutive shots. You don't do it on the course so don't practice that way. If you visualize a hole you recently played, use the clubs you would use on the course in that order and aim for specific targets or yardage at the range.

I always finish the last 15-20 minutes of my driving range session playing a "round" on the range. Start with a tee shot, imagine the result and then take the next shot - play your home course on the range if you will - switching clubs each swing. Each swing is treated like it would be on the course - get behind ball in the "Think Box" and prepare for the shot, then step into the "Play" box and take the swing. In this way, you are practicing the way you play - which should translate to the course.

A good read about taking it from the range to the course, pre shot routine, and just basic mental approach to the game is the book by Annika's teachers Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriot, Every Shot Must Have a Purpose.

IIRC - this book is where I got the "Think Box" and "Play Box" concepts - very valuable read....

How many times have you practiced like this before a round? What was your one simple swing thought on the course?  Does the swing thought relate to your priority piece?

I've ordered a cam caddy to mount my iPhone 6+ to my bag and I'll send a video. Thanks Mike.

    • It's likely per "category" of clubs, so irons would be one category, wedges would be a category, driver a category, fairway woods/hybrid a category, etc. They aren't going to charge you $50 per iron for a fitting. Almost all iron fittings are done with like a 6 or 7 iron, fitters don't carry full sets of every iron. So yes, if you use a 7 iron for the fitting and let's say you get fit into the P790 with a certain shaft, 1 degree flat and .5" longer than normal you would just order the full set of P790s with that shaft/lie angle/length combination and you'll be perfectly fine.
    • I think the $50 fitting price tag is per club. The clubs I am most interested in getting fitted for are irons. And I'd rather not spend a bunch on getting fitted for multiple irons. Would I be fairly safe to assume that choosing something like a 6 or 7 iron for fitting would likely relate to other lofts in the same configuration/make/model?
    • A Mevo is 500. Comes with little decals to hit balls inside too.
    • I replaced a 3 driving iron as it was called. If I hit it clean it went close to 180 like the hybrid does but it was very inconsistent. I had to aim left because it would fade and I could never hit it dead nuts straight. We have a lot of wind being by the ocean so a left to right wind was suicidal with that club for me. I don't have a lot of Shot Scope data so far that would show yardage as far as dispersion or proximity to hole goes, but so far everything is staying relatively tight. I am not spraying the ball, I feel like it goes where I aim, any thing off is user error and not the club.
    • Ok, great. Best of luck to you in the future. I gave you the answer for significantly less than $20k though, just sayin.
