Hey team:

Looking for some technical advice.  I have a set of Proj X 6.0 iron shafts (3-pw).  What would be the relative effect if I double soft-stepped the shafts for my playing partner. (put the 3i into the 5i, 4i into the 6i, etc.)  From a length standpoint that works, and my buddy plays 3 and 4 hybrids anyway.  The advice from a pro fitter said that it would essentially a set of 5.3s  (0.35 for each soft step).  Does that make sense?  I've soft-stepped PXs for my own use, and I feel the difference, but when I do it for someone else I want to make sure I'm not pushing him off of a cliff.

Thanks!

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. I use the 6.0's in my J36's. Can you tell the difference between a soft stepped 6.0 vs. a 5.5?

I just got the answer to my post from a golfsmith clubmaker, so I'm happy.  The earlier advice I got was correct.

He said that soft stepping 1 club would drop the playing flex 0.35, in the case of Proj Xs.  That would mean a softstep of 1 club (3i into 4i) of your 6.0s would make them 5.65s.  A 2-club soft step would turn them in to 5.3s.

Have fun!

    • Focus on width at P2 (no collapse of trail elbow), and then a robust left arm structure at P4 (looking for arm to reach eye to ball plane level visually to ensure a full lift). Am incorporating more time with the 3W this year as I believe it is as intolerant a club of anything but a quality tempo, path and clubface control as any.  Game time speed maybe a few months away but I'm grateful to be swinging at all at this stage of recovery.
