I recently lost 35 pounds and want to start carrying my bag and walking. I currently have a 4 year old sunmountain bag with stand. The strap system puts a lot of stress on my shoulders. I played 9 holes yesterday with only 10 clubs and 6 balls in my bag. This seemed to be a workable temporary solution. I am hoping that I can get some recommendations for a bag based on my back and shoulder problem.

I am retired and my club has a $850 per year prepaid cart deal. That would be quite inexpensive, but I would miss the exercise and pace of play that I enjoy while walking.

If I were going to buy a new carry bag I'd be looking real hard at Ping's "Hoofer" line of bags.  Smooth operation with thought out pockets, etc.

I cannot use a pull cart on our course. It's either carts or carry bag.

Sun Mountain has a Zero G bag. It has a strap on it that goes around your waist to take the pressure off you back. i think it might be worth checking out

I focus a bit of the same problem (and I didn't loose 35 pounds) ....... I have a Sunmountain Four5 which I like a lot but if you bring all 14 clubs, plus two bottles of water, balls and some extra gear the load makes playing 18 holes a bit too much, I am about sure it adds a few strokes in the last holes........

If there is no possibility to walk with a push or pull cart and the options are walking/carrying or a cart ...... My best option is leaving out a few clubs that might be used only once or even less at our course (in my case 3W, Hy2, 3i and GW) ...... I can hit a 4i about 195-200 yds and I seldom need anything longer on a second shot and going for the green in two at the long par 5's is not really my game.

Leaving out a few clubs, bring only one bottle, leave the raingear out, take only as much balls with you as you would normally be using, makes a lot of difference !!!!

Really?  I have never heard that before - ever.  What a bizarre rule in my opinion.

Adding to that, they strap system Ping uses is, in my opinion, superior to every other bag. I play collegiate golf and we walk 36 holes a day sometimes. Anyways, last year we had Ping Hoofer and this year we got new Sun Mountain bags. During the season, I swapped the straps on the bags so that I could use the Ping carrying system. In the summer, I'll switch entirely back to the Hoofer. So comfy.

That makes no sense, Ive seen courses that dont like people walking at all(esp busy days) but never allowing you to use a push cart.  I dont get it, people carrying is by far the the slowest way anyone can possibly play golf, i would think they would want people to use push carts to speed up pace of play.   Most courses around here dont even charge to use their push carts, they're basic 2 wheel models but still way better than carrying.   Its not like push carts are going to tear up the course, thats what riding carts do when people disobey cart path only signs when the course is wet.  There's always a few knuckleheads that drive the cart everywhere no matter what the conditions and make tracks in the fairways and sometimes way to close to the greens(even on the greens sometimes, you get a few complete idiots on public courses)

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
