So, I played a little as a little kid and stopped playing until now (I'm 22). I've been working on my swing a lot for a few months now and up until a couple days ago I was really starting to get in a groove. I was definitely getting some solid numbers (getting ball speeds of between 105-115 with my 6 iron) with a pull or slice sometimes but pretty good overall. I hit the ball solid but I make poor choices (trying to gun a hybrid out of the trees and going for the green and choices like that) and my putting leaves much to be desired (I have been known to four putt more than a couple times in a single round). I started practicing yesterday, though, and all of a sudden I was hooking the ball like crazy, getting 1-4 degree launch angles, and I basically lost my swing. I kept trying to get it back yesterday, and I got more and more distressed that I had lost all the work I put into my swing (I had a pretty nasty reverse pivot before and way too much movement in my body with very little arm motion) and now I'm not sure what to do. I was told that I should spend some time practicing with my 1/2 and 3/4 swing just to get back into the motion and not really stress about the full swing, but I'm concerned because I had it going pretty well and then all of a sudden everything broke down. Anyone have any suggestions?

That is good advice on the 1/2 and 3/4 swings. When I am really struggling at the range to do what I know I am capable of. I will take a 5 minute break, then go into 1/2 swings and knockdowns, all at a relatively slower swing speed until I feel like I'm getting solid contact again. This happens to me more often if I am spending a lot of time at the range, and it is usually after I have one of those days where I'm hitting everything really well, then the next day everything falls apart....patience is difficult to maintain in those situations.

I have/am going through the same thing, my local pro told me that it does happen to some people and the best way to get out of the rutt is to go to the range with your full bag and hit some balls without hitting the same club twice in a row. pick a target out on the range and take the appropriate club that will get you there with a 3/4 swing. pick a different target every time taking a 3/4 swing and just focus on alignment and a 3/4 swing. have 2-3 sessions like that at the range and your swing will return along with your confidence.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
