am i right in thinking that the two clubs above should hit them about the same distance and i should remove one from my bag, and thus be able to carry another club i might need (maybe an extra wedge)

In theory, yes.  But depending on the specs for the shafts and club heads, and on how well you hit the two clubs relative to each other (ie, which is naturally more comfortable), there could easily be a pretty big difference in average distance with two clubs like that, and it might no necessarily favor the 20˚ 5w.

I replaced my 5w with a 19˚ hybrid and never looked back.  It ended up replacing my 3i as well actually (I just choke up a bit and swing easy)
