Great to read so many interesting articles. I have just recently re-joined a Golf Club I will call Happy Valley Golf Club (HVGC) I was asked to join to; a. Take over the accounts and become the treasurer and b. provide an outside analysis of the club as a new member would do when first joining a golf club.

So I was really excited about getting back into golf and the first Saturday of March 2011 arrived my daughter and I went along to play in the club haggle. What I found really interesting was no one wanted to play with us! all the members had pre-arranged groups (liked playing with their mates) and so a new member found it very difficult to slot into a four. This frustrated me as my daughter is not that bad and nor am I and so that went down as a mark against the club; poor customer service on the behalf of the board.

Looking at the demographic of that Saturday the average age of the club members would be around 65 years old. My question is; is this normal?

What is the average age of your club members that play in the club day competition?

What is the average age of your clubs managing board of directors?

Has your club membership decreased over the last 5 years?

If so what has happened to the members that left the club?

      We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
