So I found a swing key by hitting it into the woods saturday...(flat plane question)

I've been hitting the ball horribly for weeks and hit a snap hook on the 13th hole saturday, my ball was under a bunch of trees and I had a little window to swing between them (backswing) but I had to take the club back pretty flat (from past waist high) to miss them.  I crushed the ball, best contact of the day.  limped in with an 82 with 4 balls OB, a really bad score for me especially considering my short game was on fire.

Yesterday (on a different course, more difficult) I started bogey-double bogey and was fed up with hitting the ball poorly so I decided to swing like I did when I had to miss those trees the previous day: pured.  From there on out I only missed one green in regulation (if you count fringe) and had 2 tap in birdies.  I miss hit two shots (slightly) in 16 holes and although I struggled on the greens was -1 and shot 74 (w/ 4 3-putts).   except for a few slight blocks and a slight pull hook: the furthest I hit a ball off line was about 10 paces from my target and my distance control was near perfect...irons actually going a little further than i'm used to. by the back nine I was just trying to swing the club on the same plane as the shaft is at address fwiw.

The swing feels extremely flat to me, I looked at it in the mirror earlier and my arm is about on plane with my shoulders although my shoulder plane is still in more of a 'two plane' type position ala flatter turn wise.

questions:

1) did I just discover what a 'one plane swing' feels like?

(assuming #1)

2) If I'm over-drawing the ball could this be due to the shoulder turn being too flat possibly?

3) Any suggestions on how to get the ball to move left-to-right and/or steeper into impact in a flatter or one-plane type swing when needed? (ie rough and ball above the feet shots)

4) any advice on how to check your backswing plane and shoulder plane/turn in this type of flatter plane?

fwiw: in lessons recently i've been told that I was getting a little too steep from about waist high to the top of the swing and my left arm had not been matching up with my shoulder plane.  I didn't realize how to fix it though.

Yea, a flatter shaft plane back and through has been working great for me this season. I was so steep that my instructor added this and its been wonderful. Really helps to hit push draws. And now I know that if I take it back steeper, I can hit a cut around a tree if I need to. I'm not sure if this is a fundamental/secret of golf but its been a huge key for me. Keep doing it, I say

I took a lesson today:

1) not too flat, actually on plane

2) my offline shots were coming from getting the right elbow away from the body on the backswing

things are working fine now so far.

he also noticed that my 3 wood's hosel wasn't sitting right (titleist screw thing) and I adjusted it and the club feels a lot better now...sweet!

    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
    • Yes, but season 2 being all of six episodes is a bit of a let-down, even if the season itself wasn't.
