About two years ago, I replaced my 4 iron with a 23 degree Cobra hybrid. Boy, was I glad I did! The Cobra Baffler with the Aldila NV-HL shaft is so easy to hit and it is so versatile. I can hit it well off the box, on the fairway, out of the rough and, with a decent lie, I can pick the ball clean out of a fairway bunker. When I saw the new version of the Cobra hybrid that is just now available in my club's pro shop ( with essentially the same shaft ), I decided to try out the demo 26 degree 5 iron replacement. I know it may sound heretical to suggest replacing a 5 iron with a hybrid, but, oh boy, did I hit that hybrid well! And, I hit it more consistently than I did my 5 iron. I am strongly considering making the move from the 5 iron to the hybrid. While I am not looking for affirmation regarding the decision to switch clubs, I am curious, given the varying degree of proficiency, experience, and handicaps of our membership, what might be others' thoughts on the increasing rise in popularity of hybrids, especially as replacements for mid irons.

Anything that increases my GIR and decreases my stress levels over a ball is a vote for YES...

I love my Cobra 23*. I use it as a replacement for a 3-Iron (which I never owned in the first place), since I hit it about 10-15 farther than my 4-Iron. As for 5-Hybrid, yes! Can you afford it? Can you hit it at least as far as your 5-Iron? Do you prefer its ball flight? Then get it and use it! Dana Quigley, IIRC, sometimes has hybrids up to and including the seven. When you're considering replacing your SW with a hybrid, then it may be time to wonder. Until then, enjoy.

All that matters at the end of the day is...how many :)

Yes, replace those long irons with hybrids.

    • Thank you. That's probably what I'll respond with. Yes. For the match, we played the temporary greens and counted those scores. Not ideal, but it worked (and we split the holes, so no damage done really). For handicap posting, it changed a 520 yard par 5 into a ~400 par 4 and a 380 yard par 4 into a 130 yard par 3. That's why I'm asking about handicap posting (and did not put this in the rules of golf subforum).
    • Day 4: Worked on short game shots focusing on getting my weight moving forward on the backswing and follow-through and bringing the low point forward.
    • Did you play the 2 holes with their temporary greens.  If so, I don't see why your score shouldn't count as it would normally.  I get the point that the hole does change but if everybody is playing the same conditions then I think it is fair
    • Just a suggestion.. do a left hand-only 'trial'. You can do in your living room. Ensure arm structure stays intact throughout the swing and the wrist does not break down until well after impact. It will possibly help you identify if it's a right side (trail) over/early-dominance, weight-shift timing, pivot stall, hand path issue, some combo of these, etc.
    • Yup, 3 triples, 8 bogeys and 7 pars I think.  So maybe 17 over.  But yeah, happy with the score, game and trophy
