Hello all.  I have been lurking in this excellent online community for the past couple of weeks.  The information on this site has really helped me with my recomittment to improving my horribly neglected golf game.

It was a happy coincidence that my Kodak FX1 was delivered to the office on the same morning that I had taken a half day to drop my girlfriend off at the airport so I decided to shoot some video at the range.  The posted videos are swings with a 7 iron.  I can post swings with additional clubs if needed.

My misses typically sweeping hooks and thin pushes.  I draw the ball when swinging well.

7 Iron - Down the line

7 Iron - Face On

Comments:

I haven't seen my swing on video in over 10 years, and the following stood out the most to me:

-I seem to have developed a large move up and away from the ball at the top of the backswing as evident by my head movement.  Shouler turn too flat?  Overswinging?

-Stance too narrow.

-Maybe not enough forward lean at address and knees not flexed enough.

Any feedback or tips that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Heres what I see...

To address the issues that you've brought up already, I think your stance is fine... your feet are just outside of your shoulders which is fine.  A little more shaft lean at address probably would be a good thing.

You do have a big move up and away from the ball...

The green is where your head was at address, the red where it is at the top of your swing and the yellow where it is right before impact... its very hard to hit the ball with any sort of consistency when your head moves that much.  It seems like your first move is to get all your weight to your back leg, you don't need to do that.  Think about keeping centered over the ball... imagine where your shirt buttons would be at address and leave them in the same place during the swing.

Also, I couldn't get a good shot of impact but you also seem to be flipping... Erik had me do a drill to help this where you put an alignment stick or whatever into the ground just in front of the ball but outside your swing path... you just want to feel like your hands beat the club head past that barrier.

You also mentioned having too flat of a shoulder turn.... you do.  You want to feel like your left shoulder is pointing down at the ball at the top of your swing.

Take a look at the videos posted by the Golf Evolution on YouTube... they are very helpful...  Check out the one that deals with "Maintaining your Spine Angle vs. Inclination to the Ground"

Maybe Erik or somebody else with a little more knowledge can help you out more but this is what I see.

On a side note, it would be helpful in the future if you could edit down the videos... they were pretty big for me to download into Analyzr so I could do the drawing.

Also, if you like taking video of your swing, it may be worth it to invest in a high speed camera as you will be able to see different positions, such as impact, more clearly.  The best place to start with those is with a Casio... I got mine for just under a $100 and it does a pretty good job.

Thanks for the quick reply.  Yeah, I think that move away from the ball is really a killer for me.  I hope that making my shoulder turn a little steeper will help cut that down, and maybe lead to a little shorter swing.  When I get my swing timed up properly, I hit it great, but some days, I just can't recover from that move away from the ball.  I think that it does sometimes lead to a flippy swing since I get so far behind the ball that I can't clear my hips fast enough to get out of my arms' way and I have no choice but to deliver the club too early.

Sorry about the video size, I didn't even think about anyone trying to pull them down from Youtube.  I'll try edit them, or I'll just shoot new, shorter videos this weekend.  Again, thanks for the reply and giving me something concrete to start working on.

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
